Immigrant Ancestor: Johan Georg (1702-~1767)
his children: John, Daniel, Samuel, Johan Dietrich, Johan Martin, Andrew
There are two books with a great deal of information about the Dunker Arnolds:
The German Baptist Arnolds by Lester H. Binnie. [North Manchester, Ind. : L.H. Binnie, 1990].
and
Allegheny Passage : churches and families, West Marva District Church of the Brethren, 1752-1990 by Emmert F. Bittinger [Camden, ME : Penobscot Press, 199].
Binnie is my main authority.
The immigrant ancestor of this family was Johan Georg Arnold (1702-~1767) who married Anna Maria Barth (1702- ~1780). They lived in Zurzenhausen, Germany. Two sons were baptized in the Zurzenhausen Lutheran KB - Johan Martin in 1731 and Johan Dieterich in 1735 - but after that, they disappear from documentary view. Three of the four sons who do show up in American records were born before Martin and Dieterich, so possibly JG and wife lived for a while in a different parish?
In 1738, JG received permission to emigrate, and he and his wife and several children (unnamed, unnumbered) sailed on the Elizabeth which landed in Philadelphia on October 30 of that year. They eventually settled in Maryland, but it is possible that they stopped first in Amwell, New Jersey, where a community of Brethren had been organized by Jacob Naas in about 1735.
On 15 Jan 1739, JG was naturalized, and later that year came his first land deal:
Daniel Dulany and wife Henrietta had been granted a warrant for 9340 acres within a manor beholden ot Conococheague in Prince George County.
"Dulany has discovered a parcel of 150 acres of vacant land where John George Arnold has seated and made some improvements without making any rights . . . by warrant 26 May 1739, these 150 acres are certified and have been surveyed for Dulany who has assigned the tract to Arnold, who has paid 15 shillings sterling for some improvements and to whom the Ash Swamp, 150 acres in Prince George's county, beginning at a bounded Spanish Oak near the head of an ashton swamp, a draft of Ceimego(s)heige Creek, and about 500 yards from the dwelling house of Arnold, according to a certificate of surved 19 Dec 1739. Rent 6 shillings sterling. Patent 16 Jan 1739 (1740?)” Maryland Hall of Records, EI #2, pp 876-877 (cited in Binnie)
Ash Swamp is/was about 3 miles south of the Pennsylvania State line, a little north of what is now Hagerstown, MD.
He continued to buy and sell land - and grant various parcels to his sons. By 1768, all the lands had been disposed of, and it is assumed he died around that time. His wife wrote her will in 1799 so it is assumed she died around then.
Their children:
John - b ~1725 in Germany - d~1790 in Frederick County, Maryland
m (1) Margaret Albaugh - 9 children
(2) Catherine Whip
John inherited his mother’s estate, all the others had moved away
Daniel - b ~1726 in Germany - d after 1800 in (probably) western Pennsylvania
m Agnes Stoner - 8 or 9 children
Samuel - b 1728 in Germany - d 1808 in Adams County, Pennsylvania
m Elizabeth Lehn - 9 children
Johan Martin - b 1731 in Germany
nothing more known
Johan Dieterich - b 1735 in Germany
nothing more known
Andrew - b ~1738 in Germany or America - d 1821 in Botetourt County, Virginia
most researchers think he was born in America, and therefore after 1738
m Catherine Stoner - 10 children
Some researchers also include a daughter, name unknown, who married Ludwig Kreamer or Kummerer, because JG and Anna Maria were sponsors of her child, bp 1743 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, MD.
John - his children are the Hampshire County Arnolds (mostly)
John, born about 1725 in Germany, presumably emigrated to America with his parents in 1738. It is said he was naturalized in January 1739 along with his father and brothers - it seems a little young to me, but perhaps that was the way it was done then.
He married Margaret - or Anna Margaret - Albaugh, and in 1748 Susanna, their first (known) child, was born. They had at least 9 children, the last born in 1768. Margaret died in about 1769, and John remarried Catherine Whip, widow of Philip Ludwick, who brought a daughter Mary to the marriage - who eventually married her step-brother Samuel. At least I think this is the way it went.
John was fined for not enrolling in the militia in 1776 [actually the fine was remitted because of his age], which supports the theory that they were all Dunkers, because Dunkers were pacifists, refusing to bear arms in a military operation. I am not clear why John's fine was remitted because of age (51) but not Daniel's (50) or Andrew's (~48). Daniel could be John's son and therefore younger, but Andrew is almost certainly his brother????
List of Nonenrollers Returned and Fined - April, May, June 1776 (Committee of Observation, Frederick Co, MD)
April 11 Andrew Arnold 10 pounds June 4 reduced 8
April 22 Daniel Arnold 7.10 reduced 3.15
May 6 John Arnold fine remitted because of age
May 6 John Arnold, son of John reduced to 5 pounds
(also Zachariah Albaugh, Nicholas Leatherman, Peter and Philip Miller)
John was the only heir when his mother died (~1780) - the others had received lands from their father before he died and most had moved away. John wrote his own will in 1785, but it wasn’t probated until 1790, so it is assumed he died around that time. (He is not on the census for that year.) It is not known when his second wife died. His children all moved away from Maryland (except for Margaret who may have moved back to Frederick Co), many to Hampshire County, Virginia (just across the border) and some to Pennsylvania.
The ones who went to Hampshire County: Catherine (Daniel Whip), Charity (Jacob Ludwig), Samuel (Mary Ludwig), Zachariah (Abigail Miller), Daniel S (Elizabeth Thomas, Elizabeth Wine).
The ones who went to Pennsylvania: Susanna (George Gantz), John (Elizabeth Stoner), Margaret (John Whip).
The ones who have not been found: Mary (FNU Ferguson) - she died before her father did.

Daniel 93CATHERINE ARNOLD WHO MARRIED DANIEL WHIP
On Dec. 4, 1797, Daniel Whip (the name is spelled Whoop in the deed) of Hampshire County, whose wife was Catherine Arnold, a sister of Samuel, Daniel, and Zachariah Arnold, purchased 141.5 acres of land on Beaver Run from Aaron Brandenburg and his wife Ann (Sage and Jones, 5). Witnesses to this transaction were Andrew Wodrow, Okey Johnson, Jon Umpstott (Umstott), and Daniel Arnold. The exact location of this land is not given in the deed, but research reveals the land was located a few hundred yards north of the Beaver Run Church on the lane where the foundation of their house is located beside the Whip family Cemetery. The land adjoined or was near the farm of Catherine's brother, Elder Daniel Arnold.

Binnie p. 57: "No will has been found for Daniel, and no administrative papers . . . .This has been a disappointment presuming that he may have been the most influential son of John George Arnold among the Brethren. He is known to have lived within the 'far western' Pennsylvania congregations on Ten Mile Creek and Georges Creek, also reported as having had oversight of several congregations in Cumberland and Bedford Counties earlier."
~1726 - born, Germany
1738 - emigrated to America with parents (presumably!)
1739 Jan 15 - naturalized
John George and sons John, Daniel, Samuel and Andrew were naturalized and claimed allegiance to the British crown. The document states that John George Arnold was a native of Germany
~1749 - married Agnes Stoner, d/o John Stoner of Franklin Co, PA
1749 May 20 - received certificate of survey to GOATS HORN, 50a, Abraham's Creek from father
Binnie, p. 57 : Over a period of about 26 years, until 31 Oct 1775, Daniel was involved in acquiring an additional 13 tracts of land in Frederick Co. These included part of RAMS HORN, KEIZARS LOT, CHRISTIANS CHOICE, BIT THE BITER, MILL PLADE, I'VE GOT IT AT LAST, THE MOUNTAIN, part of UNCLES GIFT, part of PINEY GROVE, TIMBER, THE STONES, and BEALS LEAVINGS.
I have only included random land deals here, sorry.
It appears that he was sometimes known as Daniel George Arnold.
1752 Oct 3 - received remainder of RAMS HORN (392 acres) from father (JG had sold part of it earlier)
1756 Nov 1 - sold RAMS HORN to Captain Peter Bainbridge
1763 July - witness to the naturalization of Michael Bigler & Michael Schepfell (Daniel Leatherman, minister)
1765 Aug 28 - witness at naturalization of George Graft or Craft (Daniel Leatherman, minister)
1765 May 27-28 - met with members of Conestoga PA congregation to consider the activities of Catharine Hummer (with Daniel Leatherman)
1766 Aug - 1770 Nov - no LAND records found involving Daniel Arnold in Frederick Co
1767 - moved into the Stony Creek congretation - elected elder - had oversight of 4 churches on the east side of the Allegheny Mountain (Binnie says (p. 67) "Whether or not he was in the Stoney Creek congregation seems a matter of conjecture."
1769 - said to have settled in the Dunnings Creek area, Bedford Co, PA
Binnie spent a lot of time trying to figure out where Daniel lived, and when. The land records from 1749 to 1780 (with a gap from 1766 - 1770) identify him as "of Frederick County." And after 1781, he appears on tax and land records (and the census) as a resident of Washington (now Greene) Co, PA. According to Bittinger, Daniel went to western Pennsylvania and was a member of George Adam Martin’s congregation at Brother’s Valley. I am not clear on the geography of this. [This is apparently in Somerset County.] Bittinger says he was a preacher as early as 1763 and was elected to eldership (in Martin’s congregation) in 1769. (One GedCom I have seen has his children being born sometimes in Washington County, PA and sometimes in Frederick County, MD - back and forth - so maybe he moved back and forth???) Bittinger says further that after remaining at Stoney Creek for a while, he moved further west to 10-Mile Creek (near Redstone) in what is now Greene County, PA, the south-westernmost county in Pennsylvania. He was a minister in the church established there in 1780.

1778 Sept 20 - Daniel Arnold sr of Fred Co purchased from Samuel Finley of Wash Co MD the warrant for 353a on Shavers Creek in present Huntingdon Co, PA. This is about 50 miles NE of the Dunnings Creek area in Bedford Co, where Daniel supposedly settled in 1769 - Binnie: "It seems doubtful that Daniel ever lived on this property."
1779 Nov 22 - Daniel Arnold sr of Fred Co - sold this land (on Shaver's Creek) to Abraham Stoner of Cumberland Co PA - supposedly his brother-in-law
1780 11 Feb - sold 50a of EGYPT to Frederick Holtzapple - consent Agnes

John willed the 10-MIle Creek land to his son John
This land was probably the tact PHOENIX for which John the younger got a patent on 6 July 1797
No record of a transfer of the warrant to Daniel and then to his brother was found. However, Binnie quotes Edward D Price "in early days, many such conveyances were made by word of mouth and a handshake, or as these were termed, A Deed of Parole."

Binnie did not list all these children - I have depended instead upon Wayne Lucore’s GedCom at Rootsweb, filled out with info from a couple others. I do know that Binnie did not absolutely assign George b 1754 to Daniel and Agnes - although he did say they were a good possibility.
Since my Daniel was born ~1812-15 in Virginia, none of these men are good candidates for his father.

Bittinger says only that he was born 1 Aug 1728, married Elizabeth Lehn, died 5 Aug 1808, was buried in Mummerts Curch Cemetery, Adams Co, PA, and that he was listed as one of the members of the Conewago Church in 1770 by Morgan Edwards (Allegheny Passage, p. 168)
He married Elizabeth Lehn (Lane) in about 1755 in Pennsylvania (she was born there in 1736) and together they had about 8 children. There are differences of opinion about this - I have seen a GedCom that gives them a completely different list of children, but I have followed Binnie on this. [Note - 2 Nov 2011 - There was another Samuel in Pennsylvania, also married to an Elizabeth, whose children also emigrated to Ohio - the different list of children belonged to them. This second Samuel was (probably) one of the English Catholic Arnolds.]
Although Dunkers were pacifists, when Binnie was in the Mummerts Meeting House Cemetery, he found a Rev War marker and flag by Samuel Arnold's stone in Mummerts Cemetery: Bittinger sent a query to the Bureau of Archives & History of Pennsylvania in 1985, and received a reply stating (this is paraphrased)
He was ENROLLED for 1781 (5th Battalion, 3rd Co - Captain Wm Hafner) but no record of service - constant absence on the muster roll, but no record of his being an objector for religious reasons. "Muster Fines in the 5th Battalion of York Co Militia for 1781-1782" - shows Samuel Arnold proved to be above 53 years old, therefore exempt.
Binnie says (p. 52): "This indicates that, although he had been enrolled (drafted) into the militia, he never as much as reported for duty on military training days. Had he done so, he would likely have been discharged from the congregation and denied the right to be buried in the Mummerts Meeting House Cemetery."
NOTE: Nov 2011 - I recently learned that conscientious objectors were treated in different ways over the course of the war. In 1775 - all this is in Virginia, but I assume treatment was at least similar in other places - Quakers and Mennonites (and Dunkers?) were exempted from service in the militia. In 1776, they were ordered enlisted, but not compelled to attend musters. In 1777, they were drafted - and allowed (and expected) to provide substitutes.
He seems to have lived the rest of his life in Pennsylvania:

Andrew
Andrew, born in about 1738, possibly in Germany before his parents emigrated, possibly in America after they arrived (in October, in Philadelphia, aboard the Elizabeth). Binnie says he was born in about 1740, which would make him definitely born in America. Bittinger includes Andrew in the list of Arnolds who were naturalized in 1839 - and I have already commented several times upon this statement (the boys were awfully young, no?).
He married Catherine Stoner, sister of Agnes Stoner who married his brother Daniel. Binnie says they were married about 1754-6, probably in Franklin Co, PA. (Franklin county is just north of where father JG was in Maryland.) They had 10 children.
Despite having been married in Pennsylvania probably, they seem to have lived in Frederick County, MD for the first part of their lives. He and Catherine were members of Daniel Leatherman’s congregation in Middletown Valley and he was, according to Binnie, likely a minister before 1787. Andrew was on the list of men fined for not enrolling in the Frederick County militia in 1776, and he was on the census there until after 1800.

Andrew Arnold 00311 01001
David Arnold 20010 30010 (David is probably his son)
Between 1756 and 1803, he appears in the Frederick County land records in 24 transactions, the last (1803) being one to his son David. Andrew bought land in Botetourt county, Virginia, in 1806 - on Looney’s Creek - which he later sold to his son Daniel (1815).
I have not found him in the 1810 census, either in Maryland or Virginia, but three of his sons are in the Botetourt Co census for that year.
He wrote his will in 1811, but it was not probated until Feb, 1821, so it is assumed he died about then.
Children of Andrew Arnold and Catherine Stoner
Birthdates (except for David) not known, children arranged in order they were mentioned in his will, with guesses as to other birthdates.
Not much is available on the Internet about Andrew's children, so they - or their children - are possible as parents or grandparents of my Daniel b ~1815.
Rebecca - b ~1754 -
m Peter Myers - at least 1 son and 1 daughter
Abraham - b ~1756
probably remained in Maryland - although I have not found him on censuses.
David - b 6 Oct 1758 - d 24 Feb 1844
m Elizabeth Slifer - 7 children
remained in Maryland
Henry, J Maurice "History of the Brethren in Maryland 1936" (quoted in Binnie p. 78)
"David's natural bent was making money . . .he worked too hard for material things . . . said he wanted to be buried by the side of the road, so people would have to drive by the grave of the rich David Arnold."
David's son David (b 1790, m Catherine LNU) had a son Daniel b 1815 - but I have found nothing else about him.
Joseph - b ~1759
may have been in Botetourt early (on list of titheables 1770-80)
1799 petitioned to be exempt from fines for failure to attend militia musters

m Jacob Albright - at least 1 son
Susannah - b ~1768
Binnie says “possibly married William Ogg”

Binnie says “possibly married Catherine Elizabeth Morgan in Frederick Co”
He may have been the John Arnold, born 1 Aug 1770 who died in the War of 1812 - bushwacked (according to a letter to Binnie from a descendant).
His daughter Catherine m Frederick Rohr in 1825 - moved to Dark Co,Ohio. Another source says Catherine was the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth, niece to this fellow
Not much is available on the Internet about this fellow - so he is possible as a father of our Daniel
