The English Arnolds

(the ones who were in Hampshire County in 1840)

Richard (1694)
Richard's Children: Josiah, Andrew, Elizabeth, John, Nimrod

Children of John and Hannah Parks:
Andrew , Phoebe, Amelia, Sarah, Hannah, John Monroe, Richard, Levi

Children of Andrew : Elias, Archibald, William, John
Children of Levi : Nancy, James J, Elijah, Archibald, Jonathan

(This information is largely from a GedCom posted at Rootsweb by Janice Arnold. I think there are some problems with the GedCom, so I have not followed it exactly.)

The immigrant ancestor of this group is Richard (~1656 England - 1729 Chester Co, PA) who came over in 1678 on The Shield. His son Richard, born ~1694 in Chester Co, received a grant for land in Frederick County, MD on the Great Cacapehon; his will was probated in Hampshire County in 1758. This second Richard mentions sons John, Andrew and Nimrod, and daughter Elizabeth in his will. According to another GedCom (by Richard Brackenbury), he also had three more sons Jonathan, Richard, Jesse, and another daughter Sarah. Jonathan may be one of the Random Arnolds in Hampshire County, but according to the sources in Richard B's GedCom, Jonathan moved to Fayette Co, Pa in about 1765 (along with brothers Jesse and Andrew).

The family of the second Richard is mentioned in Bittinger’s Allegheny Passage (p. 63). Bittinger does not know the origins of the family, but says: “The Arnold, Ashbrook and Nixon families are linked to the early Baptists of the Cacapon and North River Valleys. The Brethren were often called “Baptists” because they baptized their members. Yet the first organization of regular Baptists there is said to date from 1787. German Baptist ministers and Baptist minister, John Corbley, labored in the area long before 1787. Such statements, however, can only be suggestive. If Dunker minister, William Nixon, had been converted in Hampshire County before going to Kentucky, it would surely reveal the early influence of the Brethren in the Cacapon Valley.” - Note by me - William Nixon was possibly the son of George Nixon and his second wife Rachel Parkes, although Bittinger is unable to document this because of various courthouse fires, alas. George Nixon’s first wife was Elizabeth Arnold, daughter of Richard II (see his will, below). HOWEVER, at least some of the Arnolds who came from Chester County were Quakers.

Two points: Hampshire County was formed out of Frederick County, VIRGINIA, so some of the early records are found there.
The first Richard had other sons besides Richard 2 - John, Thomas, Josiah (or Joseph), William, [Andrew], Anthony. It is possible - I have not looked into it yet - that some of the miscellaneous Arnolds are these men or their sons.

“In the Capon Bridge area of Cacapon Valley, Joseph Edwards and Richard Arnold migrated from Chester County, Pennsylvania about 1735. They were joined by the Parks, Mills, Dillon, Coudy and other families”

Children of Richard Arnold and Christiana Davis
1. Josiah - bef 1731? - 1752
Wayne Jones, who has posted a file on Rootsweb, makes this fellow a son of Richard II, and I think he is right. Richard II’s will mentions his grandson Joseph, and Josiah is the only son to have a son Joseph. I am thinking possibly Josiah might have been the eldest of Richard’s sons, since some property left to his youngest brother, who died intestate, came to Josiah’s eldest son. The names and dates of the children come from Rev Evan Pugh’s diary, via Wayne Jones.

Richard’s son John had a son named Andrew, but he was only born ~1760, so it is unlikely he is the recipient of this grant. Richard also had a brother Andrew b ~1693 - he would have been 71 years old at the time of this grant???

and now a third John is added, but I am going to continue my assumption
     1807 personal property tax list, Hampshire Co, VA - Arnold, John 1 - 2 / John jr 1 - 1
1808 - no records this year
1810 personal property tax list, Hampshire Co, VA - Arnold, John 0 - 2
the Baptist minister John has 0 titheables in 1813, so I wonder if this is him instead of this John
1810 census Hampshire - p. 768 John 00001 01001 (same page as Andrew and Levi)
over 45 = born before 1765 - I think this is John sr.
1811 personal property tax list, Hampshire Co, VA (John Slane) - John 0 - 3 -
this might be John the Baptist minister
     1812 personal property tax list, Hampshire Co, VA - John 0 - 2 -
this might be John the Baptist minister
1814 personal property tax list, Hampshire Co, VA -John 0 - 4 -
this might be John the Baptist minister
So it is possible that this John was not in Hampshire County at all from 1799
