Our Daniel was born in Virginia in about 1812.
His wife, whose maiden name was also Arnold, was born in Allegany County, Maryland in 1823.
Hampshire County shares a border with Allegany County.
There were several Daniels in Hampshire County, so it was worth a closer look.
But I haven’t managed to place our Daniel there for sure.
What I did find was a family of German Arnolds who were Dunkers (the Dunker Church became the Church of the Brethren). There are two books with a great deal of information about the Dunker Arnolds:
Allegheny Passage : churches and families, West Marva District Church of the Brethren, 1752-1990 by Emmert F. Bittinger [Camden, ME : Penobscot Press, 1990}
and
The German Baptist Arnolds by Lester H. Binnie. [North Manchester, Ind. : L.H. Binnie, 1990].
These books are my main guides, fleshed out with whatever documentation I have managed to find in the library and online.
The Hampshire County Dunkers were grandchildren of the immigrant Johan Georg Arnold. For more on the immigrant John George and his sons, see my page The Dunker Arnolds . . . . For the ones that moved to Hampshire County, see Hampshire Dunker Arnolds, below.
There was also a family of English Arnolds in Hampshire County. It is unlikely that my Daniel belonged to that group (Daniel is a common name among the Dunker Arnolds, and pretty much missing among the English) - but since the information was already collected, I have included it here under The English Arnolds.
And there is also some information about some random Arnolds, whose connection to these two groups is not known (by me at least.)
Oh, one other nice confusion. The Hampshire Arnolds started out in Frederick County, Maryland. Hampshire County, Virginia was formed in 1753 from Frederick County, Virginia, so there are records there also (particularly for the English Arnolds).
The Hampshire County Dunker Arnolds
Family tradition? says that the Arnolds moved to Hampshire County in about 1785, but that might not be quite accurate. There were a couple of Arnolds in the county (or what would be the county - it was created in 1789) earlier: Jonathan Arnold received a grant of 400 acres in 1762, and Andrew Arnold another 400 acres in 1764, both of them on the North River. I think they were part of the English Arnold family. Still other Arnolds are on the State of Virginia Enumerations for 1782 and 1784, and on the personal property tax lists from 1782 onward. Zachariah and Samuel first show up on the personal property lists in 1794, and Daniel not until 1796. According to the notes in Gregory Sweitzer’s Rootsweb file, Samuel first purchased land in Hampshire Co in 1792:
Samuel Arnold's first land purchase was on Jan 14, 1792 when he bought 150 acres, described as being on Mill Creek, from Richard Relfe. The purchaser was described as being from Frederick County [MD]. However, in his second purchase, Arnold obtained an additional 408 acres on Mill Creek from John Relfe on April 16, 1792 In this land record, he is described as being of Hampshire County.
(Zachariah and Daniel made their first land purchases in 1799 and 1798 respectively.)
I suspect they made their move not long after their father’s estate was settled. The will was written 25 Aug 1785, but not recorded until 16 Oct 1790; it directed that his estate should be sold and the proceeds divided equally among his children (except for his son John, who had already received the land in Greene Co, PA). Zachariah and Samuel are on the 1790 census for Frederick County, MD; Daniel is not. Here is the information I have gathered. It is not all the information available - sometimes there is a lot of info about sisters and cousins, but then I would remind myself that I was looking for MY ancestor and stop - so it’s spotty.

Children of Samuel and Mollie
According to Allegheny Passage, Samuel & Mollie had 12 children, and Binnie agrees - although he does clear up one mistake (probably a typo) Bittinger made [Bittinger lists Lydia twice]. Some online GedComs give him a son William b 1799 - THIS IS WRONG. That William who is not securely attached to anyone by either Bittinger or Binnie (and who is quite probably our Margaret's father) is has recently been firmly connected to the Moses batch of Arnolds. One of his sons and some grandsons were major ministers and elders of the Dunker church, so it is easy to see why the connection was made, but the Moses Arnolds claim to be English, Irish and Dutch.
There is one possibility for the father of our Daniel - John, who supposedly died young, but actually did not - not much information online about him.

Arnold, Zachariah, was born on 5 Dec 1767 and died on 5 June 1829 at Beaver Run, Hampshire County. His parents were Samuel and Abigail Arnold (German Baptist Brethren) who came to Hampshire County in 1784-5 from Frederick County, MD. Zachariah Arnold’s wife was Abigail Miller, born on 8 Jan 1776 and died on 24 Oct 1850. Note: This German branch of the Arnold family was not the same as the Arnold branch which settled at Capon Bridge circa 1740. Dr. Emmert Bittinger, professor at Bridgewater College (Va) has collected extensive data on the “Beaver Run” Arnoldswife Abigail -

Zachariah and Abigail seem to have had 11 children, 8 boys and 3 girls. Very few of them are included on published gedcoms on Rootsweb, so I have had to do some speculating of my own. These are my guesses. There are a couple of possibilities for the father of my Daniel, but they are not terribly likely.
1. John A - ~1790 - 1854
Vaguely possible as my Daniel's father, but he is assigned children in online gedcoms, which do not include a Daniel - and the children named do seem to fit the censuses quite nicely.

Most of these people are not good candidates for the father of my Daniel. They are mostly too young themselves, or they are living in the wrong places (Daniel b 1812-15, Virginia). The two possibilities - Emanuel and Daniel - are not very likely.

Emmanuel supposedly had a son Daniel, and Emmanuel had an unknown son before 1820 in Virginia - but that son disappears by the 1830 census. So????

Nothing much is known about this Daniel, so anything is possible - BUT he does not have a son listed with him on the 1820 census - and since my Daniel was possibly born as early as 1812, he is a little bit young anyway. So????
