Warren County is immediately south of Polk County (where Des Moines is)

Arnold D. J., teamster, h South Coon, Indianola Road
Arnold Alonzo, teamster, South Coon, Indianola Road
That is the last sure sign I have found of Alonzo, and I suspect he died around then.  Caroline C Arnold married Doc Beem in Warren Co on 2 Oct 1868 (also from the Ancestry database). They are in the 1880 census:
              1880 Ia Warren Washington SD3 ED231 page 25

That's it.
By the way, Alonzo seems to have been a fairly popular name among Arnolds.

There is an obit for Frank Arnold, died 1880, on the Madison County page - but he was the son of D F Arnold of Massachusetts.

And another possibility - maybe actually the best one:

?1871 - daughter Mary R. born?
1871-75 - husband Knapp died?
Note - June 2011 - Martha may or may not have been the person who married VINCENT Knapp, but I no longer think she is the person married to SIMPSON Knapp. I have found a David S Knapp in later censuses, and in each case he has a wife Martha, born 1851 in Indiana. So - not our woman. The servant Martha is still a possibility.
1875 - married Charles Pattee

The reason I thought these were Martha's children is - the father's birthplace is unknown. If they were the children of one of Martha's brothers, then Daniel and Margaret would have known this. I am no longer convinced of this, although it is a possibility - Martha claims a LOT of children on the later censuses.

This seemed to be our Charles, but his death certificate gives his age as 60, which makes him really quite young - and it contains no other genealogically useful info.
1927 - died

Pattie, Martha, Los Angeles, 1/31/1927, age 75
vitalsearch-ca.com

Her death certificate gives her birthdate as July 21, 1851, her age at death 75 years, 6 months, 10 days, her cause of death as generalized arterio-schlerosis with fatty degeneration of heart. It also gives her an occupation: washing. She was buried in Inglewood

Winterset Reporter – October 17, 1901 - Pg 4 - Archie Arnold Dead
Archie Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Arnold of this city, was born in Des Moines in 1877 and died at his home in this city Friday Oct. 11, 1901. He had survived three attacks of pneumonia which finally ran into that dreaded disease of consumption and carried him off. The funeral was held Sunday at his home at 2:30 conducted by Rev. L. E. Follansbee. He was a member of the Winterset Labor Union, which organization attended the funeral services in a body. Note: Burial in the Winterset Cemetery.

Obituary
Mrs. Elizabeth Spervestage Arnold was born in New York in 1851 and moved with her parents to Iowa in 1853, and with the exception of a few years made Iowa her home until her death. She died at her home in the northeast part of town on Oct. 15th at the age of 52 years from a stroke of apoplexy from which she has suffered for more than a year with her head and at last died very suddenly. She leaves a husband and three daughters to mourn her loss. The funeral occurred from the home Sunday and she was laid to her last rest in the Rock City cemetery.

According to the obit of John L Gilbert, who died in 1933, he was survived by his wife and three sons, so Blanche should be out there somewhere - in fact, according to the obit, she should be in Des Moines - but I haven't found her. [Note 30 Sept 2011 - not if she was divorced from him - duh!]

Unknown Son
According to Margaret's obit, Daniel and Margaret had seven children, 5 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom except William and Martha preceeded her in death (and according to the 1900 census, they all - except William and Martha - died before 1900). This child never made it onto any census, so I have no more information about him.

Unattached Grandchildren
I don't see how these children could be Alonzo's, although he was married in 1864. He apparently died (or at least his wife remarried) before they were born. [His wife's two oldest children in 1880 were William b 1869 and Minnie b 1871, which is an interesting coincidence, but there is the 2nd marriage date!] They could also be Martha and Vincent Knapp’s children - but only IF Martha married Knapp, and IF they had children??? (I know the last name should have been Knapp in that case, but census workers do make mistakes. And if they were raised by the Arnolds, maybe they took the name.) At one time I thought they were Martha’s, simply because the birthplace of the father is left blank - Margaret and Daniel obviously knew where Alonzo had been born. Seymour and Franklin (and Mary J) had also disappeared well before these children were born, and William was a bit young to be the father. So basically, I have no idea how they are connected.

And actually, I haven’t found anything further. I did find a nice possibility in Des Moines county, which excited me until I remembered the city of Des Moines is in Polk County. That one was William L Arnold, b. 1869 - but I found him with his step-father in 1880 - and with his real father in 1870, so.
