1799-1856
Virginia/Maryland - Iowa
William is included in Lester Binnie’s The German Baptist Arnolds in the section “Some Unidentified Arnolds” (p 96 and following). He is also mentioned in Emmert Bittinger’s Allegheny Passage (p. 537) as the father and grandfather of several Arnolds of the Maple Spring congregation in what is now Eglon, Preston County, West Virginia.
Binnie thinks he might be the son of John, son of George (1752), who (says Binnie) might possibly be the son of Daniel and Agnes Stoner, grandson of Johan Georg the immigrant. However, many researchers give John, his possible father, a birthdate of 1789, so that seems unlikely. A LOT of online genealogies make him the son of Samuel (another grandson of JG) and Mollie Ludwig.
Wrong!
He is not one of them DESPITE the later conversions. He actually belongs to a group of “English-Irish-Dutch” Arnolds who just happened to be living in the same general area as the German Arnolds (and the English Catholic Arnolds, and the Quaker Arnolds).
Judy Jennings, who has posted the “Marcellus and Martha Wotring Arnold Family Tree” on Ancestry, has included several documents, two of which - “The Albert S Arnold Family Record” and “Moses Arnold's Reminiscences of His Life” - I use as sources for much of the information that follows. (She also has an interesting story about her own search for William’s antecedents.) I had come to many of the conclusions supported by those documents, but until I found her Tree, my conclusions were just hunches.
On with the show . . .
William Arnold was the fourth child (second son) of John Arnold and Elizabeth Ashby, and the grandson of Moses Arnold and Sarah Timmons. The family started out in Prince William County, Virginia, and moved steadily west: Fauquier, Frederick, Hampshire/Hardy counties in Virginia and eventually Allegany County, Maryland. There may have been a jaunt south, to Cumberland County, VA, where some GedComs say John was born, but his (John’s) son Moses says he grew up “in the northern part of Maryland, west of the Alleghenies. At that time they were called the ‘Backbone of America.’” [Note - Judy Jennings thinks Moses might be confused about this.]
William was born 25 September 1799 in (probably) Maryland.
From Moses’s Reminiscences (presumably William’s experience was similar):
Where did I live? I lived at home with my parents in the northern part of Maryland, west of the Alleghenies. At that time they were called the "Backbone of America". Many's the time I have picked cranberries there and carried them to Morefield in Hardy County, Virginia. We used to take a heap of them there.
Yes, I went to school about five weeks in Maryland, and then after that, I went about six months in Virginia, and that was all I ever went to school. I used to study at night in the light of a pine knot. . . .
Clothes? Well, they were made of buckskin and linen. We raised the flax, cut it, and let it rot. What do you mean by letting it rot? Why, the bark rots and leaves just the fibers. Then we took it in bundles and hackled it, then spun it and wove it into cloth and made it into shirts and other things.
My shoes were moccasins made of deer-skin. They drew a drawer knife over the skin to get the hair off, then dried it and worked it until it was soft.
They had no salt in those days until they learned to take it from the ground. It was then yellow, but now they make it white by some process. . . .
The laurel thickets were so thick that I couldn't walk through them. They grew like thick hazel brush and were crooked and all woven together. They were green all year 'round, and had blossoms on them. Berries? I don't think so.
Streams? Yes, lots of them.
Muddy? Yes, if there was any travel in them. There were some of them pebbly and clear.
(The ellipses represent things that happened to Moses particularly).
His grandfather died in 1818 in Hardy County, Virginia, so it is possible there was some moving back and forth between Maryland and Virginia. I am pretty sure William was with his parents in Allegany County in 1810 . . .

. . . but in 1820, both he and Moses seem to be missing - I can’t find them anywhere. Moses got married in Monongalia County in 1821 and shortly afterwards moved to Ohio. I thought perhaps William might have accompanied Moses to Virginia, but Judy Jennings suggested he might have been with his father-in-law, David Sharpless - and I think she is right. He got married in Allegany County on the 13th of July . . .

Their first child, John S, was born 11 May 1821. (Birth-dates come from the Albert S Arnold Family Record.) He is the one who became a Dunker and caused all the confusion - several of his sons became elders and ministers. Second child Margaret Ann was born 5 Aug 1823, which also happens to be the date-of-birth of our Margaret as given on her death certificate. Elizabeth Ann was born 29 Aug 1825; David S 23 Feb 1828.
There is a William Arnold in Allegany County for the 1830 census, but with more little boys than expected and an additional male in the same age-bracket as William - possibly a widowed brother and his sons??? [Judy Jennings wonders if the brother might not have been John, who went to Wisconsin.]

In 1840 there was again the extra older male, but the children seem to fit

Three more children were born: Ruffina E (19 July 1840), Hannah E (25 March 1843) and George Archibald (1 Oct 1846 - note: Record says 1843, but that is clearly a slip - it also says he died in 1873 at the age of 27).
In 1842 (Aug 4) William purchased five parcels in the Original tract of land called “Cherry Creek”. Those five parcels were called Military Lots Westward of Fort Cumberland numbers 1210, 1211, 1213, 1214, and 1216.containing 250+ acres. (From Judy Jennings)
In 1843, he filed his final report as administrator to the estate of David and Margaret Sharpless. (From Judy Jennings)
In 1849, there is a marriage listing for William Arnold and Elizabeth Colter:
William Arnold 22 Oct 1849 Elizabeth Colter Allegany
I originally thought this might be our William - since both wives had the same first name, the 1850 census was no help - but the Albert S Arnold Family Record says “Elizabeth Arnold his wife Born the 22 day of July 1802; Died December 19th 1869; age 67 years 4m 2d.” So, probably not. This could be his son???
Finally, in 1850, clearly:

Sometime in the next decade - but after 1856 (he is not on the Iowa State census for that year) - he moved to Iowa, to Decatur County. Our Margaret A Arnold, was living there with her husband at the time, and William lived only a few pages away. His brother Moses was in the same county (p. 150)

His sons John and David remained in the Maryland area; his daughter Elizabeth and son William were in Missouri for this census. (Son William later moved back to Maryland).
He died 5 March 1865 and is buried in the Decatur Cemetery. Sometime after this (before 1868, when Eliza was married there), almost all the children moved to Fremont County, which is the south-westernmost county of Iowa (their sister Elizabeth joined them there in 1870). Mother Elizabeth died 19 Dec 1869 - therefore probably in Fremont county?

FORMER MINISTER PASSES AWAY
Perry A. Arnold, 84, of Beaverton, passed away at the home of his son, Calvin, in Clare, on Monday, February 28. Funeral services will be held at the Brethren Church of the Brethren on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 with the Rev. Ernest Jehnsen officiating. Burial will be in River Lawn cemetery, Isabella county. He will be at the Hall Funeral Home until 1 o'clock on Thursday.
Mr. Perry was born in Preston county, West Virginia, on November 17, 1864, the son of John S. and Susan S. Arnold. He was married there to Miss Marian Fike on August 5, 1888. There were five children, Calvin B. of Clare, Bessie E. Stiles of Fredericksburg, Va., Albert B. of Coleman, Effie E. Sowle of Eaton Rapids and Perley L. of Albion.
He became affiliated with the church in 1889, and moved from West Virginia to Lenawee county, Michigan in 1892. He was called to the ministry by the Fairview congregation in 1895. The family moved to Isabella county in 1900 and Mr. Arnold was ordained to the full ministry in 1911. In April 1914 he became pastor of the Beaverton church of the Brethren where he served for a number of years.
Mrs. Arnold passed away on September 24, 1905. He was married to Sarah Schrider May 22, 1907, who died on August 28, 1947. Following her death Mr. Arnold moved to Clare to make his home with his son. Gladwin County Record dated 03-02/1949 Column 5, Page 1

But if Ruffina’s obit is correct, she had only two surviving sisters in 1915 - Susan and Eliza.
And Margaret's own obit does not mention parents or siblings.
Elizabeth Ann 1825-1872
Bittinger says she married John A Waltz, and there is a John Waltz, with a wife Elizabeth of the right age, in Pennsylvania - BUT Bittinger also says Elizabeth died in 1872 and Elizabeth wife of John A was still going strong in 1880 (although it might have been a different Elizabeth).
There is a marriage for Elizabeth Arnold and G.A.H. Waltz in Allegany County, and I think she is a more likely candidate, especially if she is the sister of my Margaret - whose daughter named a child Lafayette.
But finally, the Albert S Arnold Family Record sets things straight - she was married to GEORGE A.

MRS RUFFINA GOFF DEAD
On Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs Ruffina Goff. She had been failing for some time and her death was looked for at any time. Ruffina Arnold was born in Alleghany county, Maryland, in 1840, and had reached the advanced age of 74 years, 6 months and 8 days. She came to Hamburg in 1868, and in 1875 was united in marriage to David Goff, who died August 19, 1892. Mrs Goff is survived by two sisters, Mrs M. Dinnebeck of Ft Collins, Colo., and Miss Sue Arnold of this place. The funeral services will be held at the home of her grand-niece, Mrs Winnie Bailey, today (Friday) at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. B.H. Coonradt, with interment in the Hamburg cemetery.
Hannah Eliza 1843 - aft 1930
It seems a bit odd to have both an Elizabeth and an Eliza, but Bittinger lists both names, and there are two women who seem to fit the bill. In the 1850 census Elizabeth is listed as Elizabeth and Eliza as Ann; in 1860 Elizabeth is married and Eliza is listed as Hannah. I believe they - Ann, Hannah and Eliza are all the same person. Ruffina’s obit mentions her sister Mrs M Dinniebeck - and the wife of M Dinniebeck was always called Eliza on the censuses.
Bittinger does NOT list either Ann or Hannah as a child. Albert S's Record calls her Hannah E
