We know, from Jennie Bothwell Bratney's notes, that Sarah Needham Bates had a brother Valentine who lived in PEI.
We assumed that his presence there was the reason Sarah chose to sail to Quebec, rather than directly to New York - so that she could visit with him before settling down.
That could be true, no?
But there were other links to Canada that did not involve PEI:
Sarah Bates married Jeremiah Bothwell in London, Ontario in 1845 -
the witnesses were William Needham and Charles Dickenson.
Sarah Needham Bates postmarked a letter from "New London, Ontario" in 1853.
Could Sarah Needham Bates have had more than one brother???
Well.
It's not proven yet, but here is what we've found so far.
This comes from George Andrew Needham of Ontario, from some notes he made after the First Needham Family Reunion:
In 1820, William Needham, the founder of the Needham settlement in London Township, and his wife, Jane Proctor, natives of Ireland, imbued with the spirit of adventure, and dissatisfied with conditions in their native land, embarked on a small sailing vessel bound for America, and bringing with them their five children, Elizabeth (Mrs. Charles Dickenson), Anne (Mrs. Thomas Quait), Jane (Mrs Thomas Walden), Richard, and Mary (Mrs. Thomas Stedman). Owing to adverse winds, the barque was buffeted about, and not until 13 weeks had passed did they arrive at Boston, Mass. From there they journeyed to Westmoreland, near Rome, N.Y., where they resided for 12 years. Two daughters and two sons were born in the United States, Hannah (Mrs. Robert Gowan), Julia (Mrs. Henry McGuffin), Joseph and Cephas.
In 1832 William Needham and his eldest son, Richard, set out for Canada, arriving in Upper Canada. Here they were met by London Township friends, who guided them through the forests to Lot 9, Concession 10, on the graded sideroad of London Township, the old Needham homestead, which has remained in the family for over a century. William Needham later sent for his wife and family, all settling on this fine estate.
The late Thomas Needham, for many years a resident of London, and widely known throughout Western Ontario, was born on the old homestead in 1834, residing there until he retired from the farming industry, when his son, Garfield Needham, the present owner, took charge.

Other Needhams in London
I have no idea who these other Needhams are. The first three are of an age to be brothers (possibly sons of the elusive Richard??? - but if so, where were they - and he - for 40+ years?) The fourth seems to be a newer arrival.
