No, we are not related to the Earls of Bothwell.
(I never met a Bothwell who failed to mention that.)
Our Bothwells came to America in the 1830s from Armagh in Ulster.
Therefore I assume they were part of the Plantation of Ulster.
Therefore I assume they were originally lowland Scots -
Therefore no kilts or tartans or romantic regalia for us.
Another assumption I make is that they came from the area around the village of Bothwell - otherwise, why the name? But I could be wrong.
They (three brothers, two sisters) arrived first in Canada (we're not sure just where), then moved down to Burlington, Vermont, and then out to northwestern Illinois. The first generation remained in that general area; the second generation moved on - most of them westward, but a few went east, some as far as New England again.
My particular branchlet didn't stop until it hit the Pacific Ocean.

The Bothwell Family Research Center site
has a lot of information on a lot of Bothwells, as well as some wonderful historical information.

This site is nothing like that.
This is only about one particular branch of the Bothwell family - mine -
But it does include some odds and ends I gathered along the way about other Bothwells.
Many thanks to newly discovered cousins Eileen Murphy, Linda Nielsen, William Bratney - and especially to my fellow-conspirator and brother, Kearney Bothwell.
Their contributions were enormous and essential.
Any errors (of fact, typography or emphasis) are my responsibility.
