The youngest child of Jeremiah and Sarah Bates Bothwell was born on March 22, 1858. He was born in Springfield, Illinois, and I have no idea what Sarah and Jeremiah were doing there at that time - maybe seeing to one of Jeremiah’s land deals? I have not been able to find any family in the area that Sarah might have been visiting, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any.
David was with his parents for the 1860, 1865, and 1870 censuses. After Jeremiah and Sarah divorced, he apparently went out to Nebraska with the rest of the family (except for both Jeremiahs).
In 1879 he married Stella Julia McManus, daughter of John McManus and Julia Niblack. She was born18 Aug 1861 in Racine, Wisconsin. There were Niblacks in Whiteside County, but if they were related to Stella’s people, it was only obliquely - her branch of Niblacks were in Wisconsin from very early on (her mother had been born there in 1841).

David E. Bothwell purchased "railroad land" from the Burlington Railroad, receiving the deed to the E 1/2 NE 1/4 of Section 23 on April 27, 1883.
David and Stella had 6 children:
1 Herman Edgar (29 Nov 1880 Nebraska - 5 Sep 1915 Denver)
2 Arta Julia f (Jan 1882 Nebraska - ? ; m Fred Moore)
3 Jeremiah W. (24 Sep 1885 Nebraska - ?; m ?)
4 Clarence W. "Clair" (21 Oct 1887 - 9 Oct 1915?; m ?)
5. David Edgar ( Feb 1893 - before 1900?)
6 Fern Estella (4 Jan 1899 Tobias, Nebraska - 17 Jan 1958; m 1921 John Kozicki)
His movements are a little unclear for the next few years. In 1889, his brother James mentioned in a letter to Jennie that David wanted to sell the house in Tobias, and in 1890, he was in the City Directory for Ohiowa, Nebraska, listed as a tobacco and cigar store proprietor - but for the 1900 census, he was back in Tobias.

Sometime around 1903, they all moved to Denver, and David ran a pancake flour and maple syrup business - although I am not clear on when it was started up. In 1903, he and his brother Jeremiah and his sons were running a grocery store (Jeremiah had been a grocer in Iowa).

David E. Bothwell, 2429 Stout. Occupation: commercial traveler
Edgar H. Bothwell resided at 2429 Stout.
Jeremiah W. Bothwell resided at 2429 Stout. Occupation: painter. (Denver city directory)
Son Jeremiah would have been ~20 - It could have been brother Jeremiah, who worked as a painter before becoming a grocer, but he also was in the Colorado Springs City Directory, so I suspect this is David’s son.
1906 Denver City Directory
Clarence W. Bothwell resided at 2429 Stout.
David E. Bothwell resided at 2429 Stout. Occupation: salesman, Middleswarth Com Co.
Jay W. Bothwell, resided at 2429 Stout. Occupation: cabinetmaker, Grauman-Riley Fixture Co.
Jay W. Bothwell opened a studio at 734 19th Street, Denver, making pottery, using an idea he got while working in a coffin factory in Sterling, Ill., around 1890. Organized the Bothwell Marbleizing and Construction Co.,offices in the Coronado Bldg. (Source: Denver Post, 5/13/1906).
Now this is a real problem. Brother Jeremiah worked in a coffin factory in Sterling, but he had left before 1890 (in 1884 actually) - and he was listed in the Colorado Springs City Directories.
In 1910, brother Jeremiah was in Colorado Springs was calling himself a manufacturer of syrup. David, as you can see, had not yet called himself that. I assumed that David had started the business, and that brother Jeremiah possibly operated a branch office - but it could have been the other way around.

Jay N. Bothwell, no address listed. Occupation: varnisher, Pullman
Mrs. Mary A. Bothwell resided at 1133 Cherokee. Occupation: millinery.
In the 1910 census, we find the first mention of syrup - but as the occupation of David’s son.

D.E. Bothwell, 57, Dies of Apoplexy
Decedent was Widely Known in Denver
as a Syrup Manufacturer
"D.E. Bothwell, 57, a syrup manufacturer of 2163 Arapahoe street and a resident of Denver for the past 12 years, died at his home 2429 Stout St. Wednesday night of apoplexy.
"Mr. Bothwell conducted a successful business in this city up to the time of his death, and was known by all the prominent businessmen. He came to Denver from Nebraska where he was engaged in farming.
"He is survived by his wife and five children, J.W., H.E., and C.W. Bothwell, Mrs. F.A. Moore, and Miss Fern Bothwell of Denver. Three brothers, J.A. Bothwell of Los Angeles, Ben F. Bothwell of Lincoln Nebr., and Jerry W.Bothwell of Colorado Springs, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Bratney of Medford,Ore."
David's death certificate listed his date of birth as March 22, 1858 in Illinois to Jerry Bothwell and Sarah Bales, both of Ireland. It listed his death as June 11, 1915 and the cause is apoplexy with the contributory cause listed as Chronic Interstial (I suspect it says intestinal) Neplon_is (or
something like that.) It also noted that he had resided at his present address for 10 years and in the state for 13, which puts his arrival date 1902ish.
Stella Julia Bothwell's certificate listed her birthdate as Aug. 18, 1863 in Wisconsin and gave as her occupation as dressmaker. Her parents were listed as John McManus of Ireland and Julia Nibell (not clear) of Wisconsin. Cause of death on June 19, 1915 was listed as Delirium Tremens. (The newspaper - and her family - believe she died of a broken heart, but I guess that is not a medical term.)
And if that wasn’t enough tragedy, two of the sons died in the fall, Herman Edgar in September, Clarence in October.
Denver Post 10 Oct. 1915, P. 3, Sec. 3:
"Man's Death Fourth in Family Since June
"When Clarence W. Bothwell, a Union Pacific brakeman, 2422 Champa, died at __ yesterday, it was the fourth death in the family since last June. The father, David E. Bothwell died June11 of hemorhage of the brain; the mother, Estella, died June 19 of a broken heart, a brother, Edward, died early in September of uremic poisoning. Two sisters and a brother are living.
"Bothwell died of tuberculosis brought on by an accident while at work on the road. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Denver members of the organization will attend the funeral in a body on Tuesday.
"The body is at Miller's Undertaking home __ East Colfax from which the funeral is to be held."
[NOTE: residence listed was that of his sister, Mrs. F. A. Moore.]
The third brother, Jeremiah, was murdered (his wife too) in Kansas City in about 1916 - but who is this in 1920?
