Other Bothwell Lines

I hope no-one thinks it rude of me to publish information about other Bothwell lines. When my Great-aunt started out, all she knew was that her father was born in Illinois in 1855. There was no Internet then, so researching was a much slower affair.

At first Aunt Dorothy thought we might be related to other Bothwells in Illinois (who turned out to be mostly descendants of James Bothwell and Charlotte Potter). After many years searching, she found her grandfather Jeremiah and realized that there was no connection - or at least not a close one - between James and Charlotte and us.
But meanwhile, there was this information . . . .

Alexander Bothwell and Catherine Hagen

Most of the information - and all the info in quotes - is from the Bothwell book (excerpts of which were published in various GenForum messages). "Genealogical History of the Family of Alexander Bothwell" subtitled "With additional biographical Data concerning the Related Pioneer Families of Captain John Potter, Andrew Scott and George Claypool." According to the title page, the 263-page book is based on an original 33 page paper by James Latimer Bothwell mimeographed in 1947, Revised and Expanded by John Luse Scott in Collaboration with Mary Estelle Sanders Furniss, Miriam Elinore Bebb Jung, Eugene West Bothwell, Helen Marie Bauerle Hancock, James Lawrence Bothwell "and others," 1971.

"No. 205 John Bothwell was born December 21, 1792, possibly at sea since several of the older members of the family recall hearing that one one of the children was born during the voyage to America, which took place in 1792. The statements of both John Homer and John Thompson Bothwell [state] that he was a soldier in the War of 1812 are confirmed by entries in Pennsylvania Archives (Sixth Series, Vol. IX, pages 93, 95 and 127) which show, by the payroll of Captain John Phillips Company of U.S. Volunteers under command of Major John Herkimer, that John Bothwell, Private, was discharged at Oswego, New York, on August 26, 1813 and received $20."

I am searching for information relative to the death of Catharine Bothwell, daughter of Alexander, II and Hannah Claypool Bothwell. The Bothwell book states that she passed away in 1864. Where did that information originate? I have found that Catharine was married to Nelson Case on July 7, 1843 in Knox Co., IL. They had a son John Wesley Case born on April 12, 1844. Nelson Case subsequently married Harriet Stewart on May 29, 1849 and on the 1850 census, John Wesley was living with Nelson's parents. I wonder if anyone has information about Catharine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

From page 13 of the Bothwell book:
"The final report of the Bothwells in Pennsylvania was found under the heading of "Indiana County Tax Lists, Armstrong, Twp., 1807" in "Caldwell's History of Indianola County. In a list of 93 taxpapers appeared these four names: Mary Bothwell, spinster; Jas. Bothwell, laborer, David Bothwell, laborer and John Bothwell, laborer. The book continues: "There was, of course, no "David" in the Alexander Bothwell family, but in view of the other three Bothwell names on the list and the fallibility of old records, it seem practically certain that the fourth member was William. The reason for their presence in Indiana County at that particular time likewise seems obvious. James, like his father, was a wheelwright and cabinet maker, and Indiana county was right in the middle of a building boom.

Hello.
For anyone who might be in the area of Sedalia, Missouri, and who has an hour to kill, you can visit and tour Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site and State Park.
Some info behind the site:
John Homer Bothwell was born in 1848 in Illinois. He went to Albany Law School, and became a lawyer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Because of MoPac's new lines through Sedalia, Bothwell was sent there to manage their business. He would end up establishing himself as a very powerful Misosuri lawyer and politician. He also was the owner of the West St. Louis Water and Light Company for a time in the early 1900's. He would eventually build himself a summer cottage 7 miles North of Sedalia on top of a 200 foot bluff. This summer cottage started out with 3 bedrooms, and grew into a 20,000 sq. foot, 30 room mansion or "Lodge". After Bothwell's death, he left his Lodge to a group of friends and family. When this group died off, the lodge was then left to the state of Missouri. Today it is a historic site, which offers guided tours of the house.
The site also has information on the Bothwell Family, and is very welling to share what they can.
