The children of Sarah and Charles

I have very little information about the children, except for census listings, except for James Bothwell Pulford.

Elizabeth married George W Johnson sometime before 1870. They apparently had two children, Webster b. about 1874, and Nellie b. about 1882.

Apparently (and I’m sorry for all the apparentlys, but these people are not in my direct line, so I have not done all the research I might have) Elizabeth and George split up, right about the time of the 1900 census.

Charles

James Bothwell
James Bothwell Pulford seemed to enjoy being a big frog in a small pond. He was a major booster, and his efforts did not go unappreciated see biographical entry.
1852 November 17 - born
1860 census - with parents in Savanna
1870 census - with parents in Savanna

In 1880, although he was not married yet, he was on his own - and he was calling himself Bothwell rather than James.  (He did have uncles and cousins named James Pulford, so perhaps he was trying to differentiate himself.)

1880 Illinois - Carroll - Savanna Im 6 p. 570b

(line 28) Pulford B wm 27 boarder druggist Il Eng Ire

He married Lucinda Weil in 1884 (January 5) and they had two children, Pearl (born January 9, 1886) and Hazel Nell (born November 29, 1887).

In 1905 (May 25) he killed himself.

from Kearney Found this interesting tidbit in the "Antique road trips" column in the Des Moines Register for 9/30/2001:"End the day by taking a scenic (and sometimes thrilling, depending on the water level) drive across two miles of dikes and bridges that cross the Mississippi River to connect Iowa to Savanna, Ill., a river town laden with historic buildings."There you'll find Pulford Opera House, an antiques mall with a sordid past. The owner, Bothwell Pulford, committed suicide days after local attorney Daniel Berry was shot and killed in 1905. Pulford's unexplained death fueled local legend that he murdered Berry because he was having an affair with his wife. After Pulford's death, the opera house remained unfinished, but visitors today can ascend the grand staircase and see the ticket windows and stage while shopping for antiques."

He has a big stone in the Savanna Township Cemetery, but it only gives his initial “B” and the dates 1852-1905. His daughter Hazel died in 1909 and is buried next to him. (lot 8)

Lucinda continued to live in Savanna, which must have been uncomfortable for her.

She died in 1931, and is buried in the Savanna Township Cemetery next to her daughter Pearl and one of Pearl’s 3 (apparently) (that word again) husbands.

Besides Allan Shaw and the unknown Mr McCall, Pearl also married Charles Earnest Gillett, but I do not have information on any of these marriages.
