Archibald Brown

174x - aft 1810
New York

Archibald Brown, 4th son, 5th child (that we know of) of Duncan McQuarrie/Brown and Effie McIlepheder, was born after they emigrated from Scotland, sometime in the 1740s probably (since they sailed in 1739).  His family was one of those brought over by Laughlin Campbell in response to a proclamation made by the governor of New York promising land to loyal Protestants.  The land, north of Albany by Lake George, was a long time coming, and meanwhile the family settled in Ulster County (in the part that would eventually become Orange County).

The land up north was finally handed out in 1764; Archibald's father Duncan received ~400 acres plus a town lot.  A list was made in 1763 of people who were supposed to get the land, and Duncan was on it.  He was listed as "Duncan McQuore & wife & 5 children, & 4 sons, & 1 daughter are living. Sons are married."  This is how we know that Archibald was born after the trip - Duncan's children's names were included on the 1739 ship list, and Archibald was not on it.  This also lets us know that Archibald had married before 1763.

The woman Archibald married was Rebeckah - we know her first name because of her son Moses's baptismal record (he was recorded as "Moses son of Archibald & Rebeckah Brown").  Una Bowman thinks her last name was possibly Caine.  I haven't looked for Caines in the early records, but the closest I've gotten on the census was a Jacob Keen in Walkill in 1800 - he is on p. 341 (the same page as Jonathan Owen) [census numbers 10110 // 30011].  There were also two Kanes (John and Martin) in Warwick, Orange County in 1800.  Since we only know the names of two of Archibald and Rebeckah's children - and the names are Moses and Thomas - , this doesn't help us much.

Archibald inherited 1/5 of the Argyle Patent property from his father in 1771, but apparently he never lived on it.  As far as I can tell, he lived all  his life in the Ulster/Orange county area.  In the early part of his marriage, he lived near Goshen, which is pretty centrally located in Orange County.  His first? two children were baptized at the First Presbyterian Church of Goshen.   Later, he must have moved (back?) north, to Walkill where father Duncan had lived - and Walkill is right on the border between Orange and Ulster.

Archibald and Rebeckah's first (probably) son, Moses, was born 29 June 1775 and baptized 19 August of that year, at the First Presbyterian in Goshen.  He is our next ancestor.  His brother Thomas was born 15 March 1777, baptized 6 July 1777, also at the First Presbyterian. Archibald and Rebeckah apparently had 6 other children as well, 3 more boys and three girls, but their names are unknown.

Archibald's service in the Revolutionary War was from 1777-1781 in the New York Militia 2nd Regiment Ulster Co (Col. James McClaughry)
        Brown, Archibald - 2nd Ulster (R-192, Cl) ? bp 1739, dp 1790, m Rebecka .....pvt (DAR-90)
                  dp = died after
Heidgerd, Ruth P., ed . Ulster County in the Revolution (a guide to those who served).
(S.l.: Ulster County Bicentennial Commission, 1977)
Una Bowman apparently looked up what that service actually entailed, and this is what she has:
4 days commencing 29 April 1777, on alarm to Peenpack
2 days commencing 20 Sept 1778, on alarm to Peenpack
4 days commencing 4 July 1779, on alarm to Peenpack
6 days commencing 10 June 1781, on a march to the frontiers of Bashe's land
4 days commencing 20 Oct 1781, on alarm to Peenpack
Also in the same regiment were Archibald's brothers, Gilbert and John, and John's son Duncan, as well as a couple of Owenses (Moses's future in-laws).

Archibald was in Walkill for the first three censuses:
1790 New York, Ulster, Wallkill 60
        217 - Archibald Brown 15400
                 1 male over 16 (b. before 1774) - Archibald b. 174x
                 5 males under 16 (b. after 1774)
                            Moses 1775, Thomas 1777
                            Male A, Male B, Male C
                 4 females
                          Female a, Female b, Female c
                          Rebeckah b. 174x?
1797 - Wallkill annexed to Orange County
1800 New York Orange Wallkill 343/232
         Archibald Brown 02201 01101
                2 males, 1 female 10-16 b. 1784-1790        Male B, Male C, Female c
                2 males, 1 female 16-26 b. 1774-1784        Male A, Thomas 1777, Female b missing female a
                1 male, 1 female over 45 b. before 1755      Archibald, Rebeckah
(Moses had married and moved to Cayuga)
1810 New York, Orange, Wallkill 259
        Archibald Brown 10101 01011
1 male under 10 b. 1800-1810                    Male D son of Male C? grandson of Archibald?
            1 female 10-16 b. 1794-1800                     Female d wife of Male C?
            1 male 16-26 b. 1784-1794                        Male C
            1 female 26-45 b. 1765 - 1784                   Female b
            1 male, 1 female over 45 b. before 1765     Archibald, Rebeckah

And that is the last record I have for Archibald.  In 1815 (Nov 12), Rebeckah was baptized (as an adult) at the 1st Presbyterian Church at Goshen (she was registered as a member on the 6th of November).  Did she move there after Archibald's death???  Was she living with one of her children???  I don't know.

That's it.

To children of Archibald and Rebeckah
To next ancestor, Moses Brown
