1836 - aft 1880
Pennsylvania - New York
Emily was the fourth of (possibly) eleven children born to Moses Brown and Susan Harkless. She was born October 7, 1836 in western Pennsylvania. I don’t know what her father did - I presume he was a “farmer” which is what everybody was in those days. He died in 1849, when he was only 40, and mother Susan was left with all those children, eight of whom were still with her on the 1850 census. (Two of them probably died young, and the oldest daughter was perhaps married by then.)
In 1854, when she was 17, Emily married Walter Scott:

Walter was a recent immigrant (1847, from Scotland probably), who had been a blacksmith in 1850 - but in 1860 he was casting about for something else to do. He eventually found work in the oil fields, and he and most of his sons worked as oilmen all their lives.
Emily and Walter had eleven children:
John 1854
George 1856
Margaret (Jane?) 1858
Walter E 1862
Henry 1865
James 1867
Emma/Emily 1870
Charles E Sept 1873 (our next ancestor)
Frank 1875
Anna 1877
Bertha 1881
They lived in western Pennsylvania and New York for most of Emily’s life.

Note: It is an assumption that these fellows are Walter’s sons. It seems like a pretty good match to me, but I have no proof. (Yet?) There is a John Scott in Cattaragus County for 1880, but later censuses give a lot of familiar names, so I thought this one was a better match, especially since there’s a possible brother there as well.
That 1880 census is the last glimpse we have of Emily. Daughter Bertha was born in 1881, so she must have lived that long, but I haven’t found her.
Sometime during the 20-year gap in the census records, Walter and sons Walter, Charles, Frank, daughter Bertha - and maybe other daughters as well who are hidden under married names - moved to California and worked in the oil fields there. (Walter and son Walter are in the 1890 Great Register of Los Angeles.) Walter appears twice in the 1900 census, once alone and once with son Walter, and both times he claims to be a widower.

So possibly Emily died between 1881 and 1900, but whether she died before or after the move, and where she is buried - I don’t know.
