I don't know if our Thomas J Brown served in the Civil War, although it is possible.  There were 91 Thomas Browns and 5 Thomas I or J Browns who served in Pennsylvania units. One possibility is the 11th Reg, PA Infantry organized at Harrisburg and in Westmoreland County - there is a Moses in Co G and a Thomas J in Co A and a George in Co E.

actually, I think this must not be ours
There is also a Moses, age 21, in Venango, on the same page as probable brother Thomas

      1860 Pennsylvania Venango 131 Cornplanter - 11 July
Joseph Shirk - many others incl Moses Brown 21 laborer
on the same page as probable brother Thomas
Moses does have a GAR notice on his grave, so he definitely served in the Civil War,  although I can't tell which unit. There were 5 (and it is always possible that Moses served in more than one).  There is a Moses in the same regiment and company as an Andrew S Brown (that would be Company F of the 123 PA Infantry - August 1862-May 1863).  Another possibility is the 11th Reg, PA Infantry organized at Harrisburg and in Westmoreland County - there is a Moses in Co G and a Thomas J in Co A - and a George in Co E.  The other three units with Moses Browns were organized in Philadelphia or Harrisburg, both of which seem a little far afield.

George McGowan
      1842 June 14 -born
1850 - with mother in Allegheny (East Deer)
also enumerated with Jane Black in 1850?
      1860 Pennsylvania Allegheny Findlay Shirland 276 (34)
            James Morgan 57 / Hannah 48 / Jeremiah 25 / John 22
George Brown 17 farm laborer // Rachel Daniels 19 servant
      1864 - died
George's death date suggests he might have died in the Civil War, and he did definitely serve.  There were 163 George Browns in Pennsylvania (Union) units, but one of them was George McGowan Brown, so there it is.  He was in Company C of the 9th PA Reserve Infantry (38th PA Volunteers).  They were in some of the worst battles of the war, including Gettysburg.

Andrew Sprowl
      1844 June - born
1850 - with mother in Allegheny (East Deer)
      1860 Allegheny East Deer 169 (58) Dorseyville - line 28 389-378
             George Humes 28 m farmer 600 Pa
                 Catherine 25 / James Albert 1m
(next page) Andrew S Brown16 farm labor Pa
Andrew might have seen service in the Civil War, but I am not certain.  There were 36 Andrew Browns who served in Pennsylvania units.  The likeliest candidate is Andrew S Brown who was a private in Company F of the 123 PA Infantry.  There was a Moses Brown in the same company.  The regiment was organized in Allegheny City in August 1862, served at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, mustered out in May 1863. - So it is possible that he served again in another unit.
