1838 - 1912
Indiana
This Nancy has been a big confusion to me - she was born at about the same time as my Nancy J Conner, and lived in Warrick County all her life. She married a Smith - and my Nancy’s second husband was a Smith. I have had to chase her down through the censuses to make sure she really was NOT my Nancy.
It is said of this Nancy that she was the daughter of John Conner and Mary Etheridge Smith - but although John may have been her father, I think Mary was not her mother, for the simple reason that John and Mary were not married until 1845 and Nancy was born in 1838. It has further been said that John (b 1818) was the son of John Connor (b 1784 - Virginia) son of Terrance Connor (b 1752 - Virginia - or Ireland) of Perry County, Indiana. Terrance came to Perry County in 1812; his son Samuel preceded him but possibly John (1784) did not join them until later - his (supposed) son John (1818) always said he was born in Pennsylvania - and so did daughter Nancy. So.
At any rate, Nancy married Larkin Smith in Warrick County in 1855:
Smith, Larkin m Nancy J Conner - 1 April 1855 by F L Bristow, p. 34 (Marriage Book 2 ½
Larkin had been married at least once and maybe twice before.
Smith, Larkin m Eliza Jane Phelps - 14 Apr 1840 by Thomas Fuller, MG, p. 31
(Marriage Book 1)
Smith, Larkin m Marinda Ann Jones - 22 June 1853 by Rev. TA Price, p. 342
(Marriage Book 2)
He is on the 1840 Warrick County census, next to Wiley Smith (Larkin’s father is said to be Wiley Smith, but perhaps not this one, who is only ~10 years older than he.)
Ohio Twp - Smith, Wiley 020001 30201 (30/40)
Smith, Larkin 00001 00001 (20/30)
And in 1850:
Campbell Twp, household 46 - Smith, Larkin 30 m farmer KY
Eliza 23 KY
Nancy 9 / William 6 / Mary 3 / Sarah 1 - all Ind
So Eliza was married when she was 13???
Then he married Nancy in 1855, and from then on they are together in Warrick County:

I did a bit of looking for Larkin Smith as well -
In the 1800 census (from Ancestry) - there was one, in New York
Richfield, Otsege NY 686 10010 // 20010
In 1810, there were 2 - both in Virginia
King and Queen 177 00100 // 00000 41
Prince George 536 00100 // 001
In 1820, there were 11
one in Virginia (Prince George)
three in Tennessee (Warren, Smith, Lincoln counties)
two in North Carolina (Johnston and Guilford counties)
one in New York (Winfield, Herkimer county)
one in Maryland (Baltimore dist 2)
one in Georgia (Lexington, Oglethorpe)
two in Kentucky
Springfield, Washington 80 - image not there
Falmouth, Pendleton Ky 22 - 010111 // 0101 no slaves
In 1830, there were 14
three in Virginia (King and Queen this time, plus Halifax and Wythe)
three in Tennessee (Dyer, Smith, Warren)
two in North Carolina (Guilford and Johnston)
one in Maryland (Baltimore)
one in Georgia (Oglethorpe)
one in Massachusetts (Middlesex)
two in Kentucky (Fayette and Pendleton)
one in Indiana
Rush 297 00001 // 0001
In 1840, there were 17 - but the one I was looking for was safely in Warrick - still, this may show which of the earlier ones couldn’t have been him
Virginia (Wythe, Prince George)
Tennessee (Smith, Lincoln)
North Carolina (Guilford, Johnston)
Maryland (Baltimore)
Massachusetts (Middlesex, Worcester)
New York (Jefferson)
Kentucky (Pendleton, Edmonson)
Vermont (Windham)
Alabama (Jackson, Macon)
Indiana (Huntington)
Warrick Ohio 38 00001 // 0001
same page - Needham and Isom jr
In 1850, there were 37 Larkins besides my one in Warrick; in 1860 there were 45 altogether; in 1870, 54; in 1880, 221 - so much for Larkin being a nice uncommon name, making it easy to search for!
