~1782 -
New Jersey - Pennsylvania - ?
Jabes was the second child (first son) of Charles and Eliza Hopewell Aber Harkless. His father was a Hessian soldier who deserted to the Americans; his mother’s family had been in America for at least a couple of generations (New York and New Jersey). He was born in about 1782 and probably in New Jersey. His next brother, George, was also born in New Jersey, but the rest of the children (7 at least) were born after the family had moved to western Pennsylvania. He was probably named after his mother's brother.
He is with his parents on the censuses of 1790 and 1800 (probably). He married in about 1810, when he was 28. There are two possible census listings for him for that year, one in Westmoreland County, and one in neighboring Allegheny County (Allegheny was formed out of Westmoreland and Washington counties in 1788.)

Either one of these - or both - could be him.
According to one of the genealogies posted on the Internet, Jabes’s wife’s name was Mary (last name unknown.)
He is possibly on the next three censuses, in Plum Township:

I haven't found any further trace of him after this. Several of his brothers (Henry, William and Aaron and probably James) moved to Ohio - but I haven't found Jabes there. It would be nice if I had some idea what the names of the children were - all I have is possibles: Susan b ~1810, Margaret b ~1813 (both married Browns).
That’s all folks.
