Margaret Hudson

1805 - 1878
North Carolina - Indiana

There are three reasons for suspecting Margaret is related to our Amelia and Rebecca Hudson. First, she is not a child of Isaac Hudson - she is one of the few unconnected Hudsons in Warrick County in the early 1800s. Second, her possible sister Rebecca named a son after her (Margaret's) husband. Third, her dates and locations match up with the others'. It's pretty thin, I know.

She was born in North Carolina on October 6, 1805. The birth place comes from the 1850 census; the birth date comes from her tombstone, which lists death date and age in years-months-days. There are places on the Internet that will do the calculation for you, and October 6 is what came up.

Her possible sisters, Amelia and Rebecca, both married in Butler County, Kentucky in 1816. Amelia and husband moved on to western Kentucky; Rebecca and husband moved north to Warrick County, Indiana and were there for the 1820 census. It is possible that Margaret was living with her sister then.

She married Ezekiel Perigo on March 7, 1822 in Warrick County, Indiana. She was 17, he was 20.

As far as I can tell, they had only one child, a son, Romeo, born about 1824.

Ezekiel's father was also a Romeo. The older Romeo lived in Ohio County, Kentucky (the next county to Butler, where the Hudson women were married) - he was on the tax list of 1800 and the census of 1810.

Ezekiel could have been one of the males under 10

Much of the population of Ohio County moved to Warrick County between 1810 and 1820, and Romeo did too.

Ezekiel could have been the second youngest male (16-26)

Ezekiel, Margaret and young Romeo are on the 1830 and 1840 censuses:

In 1850 they had two young women living with them also, but I am not sure what, if any, relationship existed.

(I suspect Margaret's mother was Susannah McDonald, who married, first, William Hudson, and second, William Williams. But Pauline Williams is too young to be a half-sister.)

In 1853, their son Romeo married Cynthia Shirley.

They had one (I think) child, a daughter, Mary Margaret, born 20 October 1853. In 1861, they got divorced - and Ezekiel got custody of Mary Margaret.

But it turns out that Romey lived with Ezekiel, so he actually had custody.

I don't know what happened to Romey after that (I haven't found him in a cemetery listing). According to the Hinman DAR file, Romey died during the Civil War at Atlanta GA. In 1870, Ezekiel, Margaret and Mary Margaret were together.
