Elizabeth Hughes

~1753 - aft 1830
Pennsylvania - Virginia - North Carolina - Kentucky - Tennessee - North Carolina

I know absolutely nothing about Elizabeth before her marriage to Henry Deweese in Philadelphia in 1768 (December 12 - St Michael & Zion Lutheran Church).  After that, I know only some things about Henry which presumably apply to Elizabeth as well.  Their first child was born in 1769, possibly in Pennsylvania, but possibly in Virginia - it is not known for certain when they settled in Botetourt County (the earliest tax listing I've seen for Henry is 1773).  The rest of their eight (possibly nine) children were supposedly all born in Virginia, but I think maybe Henry, the youngest (born 1789) was not.

1785 is the last year I've found Henry on the Virginia tax rolls, and he started acquiring land in North Carolina in 1786. For the 1790 census, they are in North Carolina.  His last purchase in North Carolina was in 1798 - after that, he only sold land (last bit sold 1807) - and in 1799, he was on the tax list for Logan County, Kentucky.

Things are murky for a while after that.  Henry and Elizabeth may have been in Kentucky for the 1810 census (living with their eldest son John) - or they may have been missed by the census taker.  Between 1810-20, there was a general scattering of Deweeses -one son (my line) stayed in the same area of Kentucky for a while, but eventually moved to western Kentucky, one son moved back to North Carolina, several others to Tennessee.  It seems that Henry and Elizabeth lived in Tennesse for a while (1820 census), and then moved back to North Carolina (1830 census) - but because the early censuses list only heads of households, it is difficult to know for sure.  At any rate, I have not found anyone who might be them after 1830.  They would have been quite old by then - Elizabeth possibly 77, Henry 84. For a more complete discussion of all this, please see Henry Deweese's page.

The rest of this page is mostly speculation about her possible parents.

Looking for an Elizabeth Hughes, born 1743-1753, in Rootsweb’s family trees:
      1. Jonathan Hughes m (4 Nov 1742 (sic)) Jane Taylor - Baltimore
              Children: Sarah        14 Sep 1732
                            Clemency   25 Sep 1739
                            Elizabeth      4 Aug 1747
      2. Elisha Hughes - Mary Unknown
                  Elizabeth 7 Nov 1750
      3. Edward Hughes (1712) - Catherine Roberts               see below under Pennsylvania
                  Elizabeth 1743

Speculation: Henry and Elizabeth Hughes Deweese had 7 sons: John, Garrett, James, Morgan, William, Henry and Lewis. All of those names are Deweese family names, except maybe James and definitely Morgan. So maybe Morgan was a Hughes family name???

From the Hughes Family Genealogy Forum web-site and from Rootsweb’s Family Trees:
There were Morgans in the Hughes family. And in the more-or-less right location in Pennsylvania (Chester County is on the outskirts of Philadelphia):
I. Morgan Hughes married Elizabeth David. He will was probated in 1737.
This Morgan, who died approximately 20 years before our Elizabeth was born, obviously wasn’t her father - could he have been her grandfather?
Morgan Hughes, East Town, Chester Co, PA -wife Elizabeth - 150 a farm
                  will probated 1727
                  4 Children:
                        1. Dorothy b. ~1700 m ~1718 Morgan Morgan, s/o Edward Morgan who lived near Morgan & Eliz H.-- Morgans were Quakers, and the Quakers opposed this marriage of Morgan Morgan -> Hugheses were not Q?
Jesse Morgan will 1757 mentions Uncles Ed. Benj. Hughes, cousins Isaac and Owen
                       2. Elizabeth baptized St. Davids Episcopal Church, Radnor June 8, 1706
in Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania by Browning. (Parents Morgan & Elizabeth H)
                       3. Benjamin baptized at St. Davids Episcopal Church Radnor Township, Delaware County, PA,  November 2, 1708
                       4. Edward baptized November 6, 1712 at St. Davids m Catherine Roberts d/o William d. 2 Nov 1758 (It isn't clear to me from my notes who died in 1758 - Catharine or her father William.  I have another note that says Edward Hughes d. 1769 )
                                       their children:[Isaac, probably] b. 1738
                                                           Owen 1736
                                                           Ann 1740
                                                           Elizabeth 1743
                                                           Benjamin
                                                           Morgan
Edward’s daughter Elizabeth strikes me as a possibility - the birth date we have for her is just an approximation.

II. This first Morgan may have been the brother of Edward Hughes, who also had a son named Morgan:
Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834, Philadelphia County Wills 1682-1726:
Hughs, Edward - . Eastown, Chester County. December 11, 1716. May 14, 1720. D. 155.
      Wife Mary.
Children: Evan, Morgan, Margaret, Mary, Sarah, Elinor and Catherine.
      Grand-children Mary, David, Elizabeth,
children of John, David and Catherine [Hughs] David.
Executors: Son Evan and friend William Davies of Radnor, gentlemen.
Tutors and Guardians: Brother Morgan Hughs. Brother-in-law Philip David and friend Thomas Edwards.
Witnesses: Hugh Howell, David Thomas and Thomas Edwards.

III. There is a Benjamin Hughes born ~1755 who has a father Morgan Hughes - too late to be son to the first-mentioned Morgan, but a  possible son of the second Morgan (and grandson of Edward) - and about the right age to be a brother to our Elizabeth. This Benjamin was born in Virginia - Frederick or Berkeley County. (There was also a Jesse Hughes, born 1767 in Berkeley Co, Va, who moved to Chester Co, PA while he was still young and was raised by relatives - so maybe Benjamin was related to him? And Jesse Hughes moved to Kentucky in 1784 with his paternal uncle Morgan.)
From Hughes Family GenForum:
Morgan Hughes - probably went to Missouri ~1820 with sons
Benjamin Hughes b. ~1755-1763 Frederick or Berkeley, VA - d. 1808-12 Jefferson, KY
         m. Susannah Preston
                     Children:
Ann m Col John Blanton, Dr. James A. Maxwell, Judge Peter McIntyre
                     Margaret m (13 Sep 1812) John Reed
                     Maria m Thomas Applegate
Benjamin jr (23 Feb 1789 KY) m (Bullitt Co, 6 Dec 1816) Nancy Brashear
Preston A. m (Claiborne Co, MS) Elizabeth Green
                     Mary E (3 June 1797) m Col. Cornelius Haring
William Preston -> also to Claiborne Co, MS
There is a William Hughes in the Rev War Abstracts, from Virginia & NC, who had a daughter Rebecca who married a Blanton.

Here is the info on Jesse (possibly a cousin?)
Jesse Hughes b. 1767 Berkeley Co, Va
to Chester Co v. young, raised by relatives
1784 to Kentucky with paternal uncle - Morgan Hughes Station, Jeff. Co, Ky
is he Benjamin’s cousin, do you think?
        1805 to Ohio

So a couple of possibilities:
      Morgan Hughes - Elizabeth David
                Benjamin (1708) moved to Virginia
Morgan b. ~1730 (this Morgan was invented to fit the time line)
                                Benjamin b. ~1755
                                Elizabeth b. ~1753
                                ???????
OR Edward Hughes - Mary (David?)
           Morgan
               Benjamin ~1755
               Elizabeth ~1753

Update - March 2006 - After my trip to the library, I found a couple of other possibilities - the one I like best is the daughter of still another Morgan:
       St David’s Protestant Episcopal - Radnor 1700
1745/6 Jan 16 Hugh, Elizabeth           Morgan - Horne?
1748 May 2 Hugh, Owen                    Morgan - Horne?
1752 Jul 6 Hugh, Hugh                       Morgan - Horne?
1759 July 23 Hugh, Margaret             Morgan - Horne?
175x May 2 Hugh, Mary                      Morgan - Horne?

And there was still another Morgan, baptised at St. David's in 1737 - the son of Benjamin and Anna - he actually fits my invented timeline (above).

So there are some things to look up, and more to think about, but I need to take a break from genealogy for a while (it's time to be out in the garden).  So this is it for now.
