Andrew Lusk

1804-1810 Virginia - 1840-50 Indiana

Andrew Lusk is one of our more elusive relatives. I have very little documentation on him; most of the information I have comes from other researchers, and I have no idea where they got their information.

I am told that Andrew is a son of Samuel Lusk and Sarah Bailey, and that makes sense. Samuel and Sarah and their family moved to Kentucky in about 1828, first to Lawrence County, and then to Greenup County - and Greenup County is where Andrew got married. All the other Greenup County Lusks were related to Samuel and Sarah, so it is probable that Andrew is also.

As far as when he was born . . . well. Samuel and Sarah got married in January of 1804, so that makes a starting point. Andrew got married in 1830, and if you assume that he was at least 18 when he got married, then that gives 1812 as an ending point - but a slightly earlier date fits in better with the other children of Samuel and Sarah. In 1820, Samuel had 3 boys younger than 10 and 3 boys 10-26 (and since Samuel and Sarah were only married in 1804, that really means the older boys must be 10-16). The younger boys are accounted for, so Andrew must be one of the older ones. Born 1804-1810. Phew.

The very first documentary evidence of Andrew's existence is in a list of purchasers at an estate sale. The sale was held February 1823 in Tazewell County, Virginia; the estate was Isham Belcher's, who was a relative on his mother's side. (It may have been his grandmother's brother, but there were several Isham Belchers around, so I am not entirely sure.)

In 1830, Andrew got married.

His wife was Charlotte A Hull. Both Dorothy McHaney (descendent of Andrew's daughter Rebecca) and Lore Hull Kreske (descendent of one of Charlotte's brothers) say that Charlotte's last name was Hull. For a long time I had no other proof of that.  But Phyllis Hughes, the Hull Family genealogist, provided this: On March 01, 1838, Rebecca Hull signed a deed which mentioned three of the heirs of John Hull, deceased. These were: (1) John M. James and Eliza Jane, his wife, formerly Eliza Jane Hull; (2) Andrew Lusk and Charlotte, his wife, formerly Charlotte Hull; and (3) Moses Hull.

In 1835, Andrew attended the estate sale of John Hull, his father-in-law.

Barbara Boyce says Andrew is on the 1839 tax list in Carter County, Kentucky. This is available at the Rootsweb Archives. Other Lusks on this list are Samuel, James and Henry (?). Also on it are Burgess Godfrey and Claiborne Smith.

In Carter County, in 1840, there is an Andrew Luske or Lucke (p. 252) [Samuel is on p. 255] The microfilm is very dim and difficult to read. (Carter County, by the way, was formed from Greenup County in 1838.)

                     1 female 0-5
                     2 males 5-10
                     1m, 1 f 10-15
1m, 1 f 15-20 since Andrew and Charlotte were only married in 1830, these are probably not their children.
1f 30-40 this could be Charlotte - she was born abt. 1804
1m 40-50 this is a little old for my Andrew although the census is often inaccurate.
If this is him, it's pretty messed up. The children who are with Charlotte in 1850 do not fit nicely into this scheme. This is the best I can make it go:
        female 0-5          probably daughter Rebecca b. 1837
2 males 5-10       possibly his two daughters, Nancy ~1833 and Emily 1834
        1m, 1 f 10-15      probably his son Jonathan B ~1831, and an unknown female
        1m, 1 f 15-20      possibly brother Whitten 19 and sister Lydia 18?

And that's it - that is all the documentation I have found on Andrew. I think he died between 1840 and 1850. In the 1840s many of the Hulls moved to Warrick County, Indiana. (Father John Hull d. abt 1834). Charlotte is there for the 1850 census, living next to one brother, nearby are two more.

               Nancy 17 Ky
               Rebecca 13 Ky

These children do not fit well with the children listed in the 1840 census. Sigh.

Since John S Lusk was born in Indiana in 1842, presumably Andrew Lusk was still alive then, and so probably he made the move with the family to Warrick County. There is no trace of him after this, however. I do not know when he died or where he is buried.

Charlotte lived until at least 1880 (she is on the 1880 census living with son John S), but I do not know when she died or where she is buried.
