~1833 Kentucky - ~1870 Illinois
Jonathan Lusk, son of Andrew Lusk and Charlotte Hull, was born in 1833 (or 1831 or 1835) in Greenup County, Kentucky. Both the Lusk and Hull families originally came from Virginia, but I think Andrew and Charlotte did not meet until Kentucky. There is an Andrew Luske in the 1840 census, but there seem to be too many people too old to be Andrew & Charlotte's children.
1840 Kentucky, Carter 252 Carter was one of the counties formed from Greenup county.

If this is him, the thing is quite messed up.
The Hulls, Charlotte's family, moved to Warrick County, Indiana, and Andrew and Charlotte did also. Andrew apparently died there, sometime after 1842, and Charlotte was a widow in the 1850 census. Jonathan is with her then.

When he was discharged from the army, Jonathan was described as 5'11" tall, with dark hair, gray eyes and a florid complexion. A woman who helped me with research on the Lusks said they often had gray eyes. She also said that they tended to be either preachers or hell-raisers. Jonathan was apparently a bit of a hell-raiser:

And in 1855, after he was already married and a father, he was in an "affray:"

I haven't seen either of those documents, so I don't know what the problem(s) were about. One of these days I will see if I can get a look at them. All the old documents are in a closet in the old courthouse in Warrick County, and the clerks don't really have time to go looking through them all, so you have to do it yourself.
In 1852, he married Nancy Jane Conner.

In 1854, their daughter, Great Great Grandmother Emily Rebecca (Becky) was born, on June 25, in Pikeville, Indiana. Emily and Rebecca were Jonathan's sisters' names. Another daughter, Charlotte, was born in 1855 - Charlotte was Jonathan's mother's name - and a son, John Riley Lusk, was born April 17, 1858. They were together in Warrick County for the 1860 census . . .

. . . but Jonathan and Nancy got divorced in 1862.

Both Jonathan and Nancy remarried, but I don't know what happened to the children. According to Mabel Rowe, Nancy married a man named Schmidt and had one daughter, named Annie (this was Mabel's mother). Mabel says Annie could have had another name, possibly Katherine; she was left an orphan at an early age and lived in foster homes and apparently did not have a good childhood. Annie eventually married Dan Heugel. Mabel also says that Grandma Becky had another sister (or half-sister) named Mollie, who married Sim Beasley when she grew up, and died fairly young, of TB (or childbirth). SO.
I have found a marriage license for a Mary E Lusk and Simon Beasley; she says her parents were John (Lusk) and --- Conner. But she also is 18 years old in 1882, which would make her born in 1864, which would be 2 years after Jonathan and Nancy divorced. ALSO, I have found a record for the birth of a male Beasley, father Simeon, mother Mary SMITH. Another little genealogical puzzle.
Grandma Becky's only memory of the Civil War is being so hungry she asked her father if they couldn't at least cut off the pig's tail to eat, so possibly she was still with her father. He did fight in the Civil War, but not until 1864.

signed John Corbin Capt & CM Dept NC, Albert Knowles Capt Co D 120th Ind
In the same company, enlisting at the same time, were Absalom and William Deweese, Grandpa Rufus's grandfather and uncle, and Austin Stanton, another of his uncles.
The regiment was organized in the winter of 1863 . . . and was mustered in March 1, 1864. It left the state March 20, proceeding to Louisville, Ky . . . . It moved to Nashville and on April 5, for Charlestown, Tenn. . . .Moving May 2 in the Atlanta campaign, it was engaged at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, taking a conspicuous part and joining in the charge which routed the enemy; in the assault of Kennesaw Mountain, and in the battle before Atlanta, July 22.
It was in the siege of Atlanta and in constant skirmishing until its evacuation being engaged at Jonesboro and Lovejoy's Station. . . .
It was detached from Sherman's army, Oct. 30, and ordered to Nashville, being in skirmishes at Columbia, and in the battle at Franklin, losing 48 in killed and wounded. . . Moving to Nashville, it took position in line of battle and took part in the battle of Dec. 15-16, joining in the pursuit of Hood's retreating forces, and going into camp at Clifton, Tenn. Embarking Jan. 15, 1865, it moved to Cincinnati, thence to Washington City, from whence it proceeded to New Berne, N.C.
Moving on March 6, with its division towards Kinston, it was in a sharp fight at Wises's Forks on the 8th and again on the 10th, when a furious assault was repulsed with heavy loss on the enemy. The regiment occupied a position in the center, exposed to the heaviest attack, and lost 7 killed, 48 wounded. Joining the forces under Gen. Cox at Kinston, it moved to Goldsboro, meeting Sherman's army . . . . It was in camp until April 10, when it moved towards Smithfield, proceeding thence to Raleigh, where it was engaged in provost duty . . . .
It then moved to Charlotte, NC, May 10, remaining there for three months and moving thence to Goldsboro. It was ordered to Raleigh, Aug 21, for garrison duty.
The regiment was mustered out Jan 6, 1866. Original strength, 976; gain by recruits 219; total 1,195. Loss by death, 151; desertion 52.

This next is from his Civil War Pension File. I can't read what department it comes from, or even the year. the only readable heading says Washington DC Oct 26th , 18..
. . . Jonathan B Lusk enrolled 21 Feb 1864 at Warrick in Co D 120 Reg Ind Vols to serve 3 years or duration of war, mustered in as private 8 Mar 1864 at Vincennes. On the muster rolls ... he is reported present on all rolls and m/o with his company at Raleigh NC Jany 8/66 a corporal.
So it would seem that Jonathan was on hand for most of the activities his regiment engaged in. (For the complete file sent to me by NARA, link here.)
He was mustered out on January 8, 1866 and on March 3, he married for the 2nd time.

I think it is Jonathan rather than his brother, John S, who is concerned here, because of Nancy. One of her possible fathers is a Terrance, and another possible had a half-brother Terrance.
Although Jonathan and Elizabeth were married in Warrick County, I don't think they stayed there for very long. Sometime between 1860 and 1870, many of the Lusks of Warrick County moved to Wayne County, Illinois. It's about 100 miles west, good farming country - and Jonathan did call himself a farmer when he enlisted. I think, however, that he did not live there long. There is a marriage record for Elizabeth Lusk included in his Civil War files - and she married on 7 February 1869. (see below) In 1871, his two children, Grandma Becky and her brother John Riley, were appointed a guardian by the County Court. So I think he must have died shortly after the move to Wayne County. He is buried there, in the Mt. Erie Cemetery (also known as the Old Yohe Cemetery) - but he has only a military stone, no dates, just his regiment. His name is also included in a large memorial for Civil War Veterans at the front of the cemetery.
Note - I have heard from a couple of descendants of John Riley Lusk, and one of them (Christine Kent) thinks Jonathan did move to Illinois after the Civil War, but to Marion County, where John Riley's future bride was born. This could very well be so - Marion County is just north and west of Wayne County, and Jonathan's Uncle George Hull settled there. So - the next thing is to check out records in that county.
