Virginia Lusks

It is possible that all the Lusks (in our line) came first to Pennsylvania, the possible exception being William's possible brother Nathan - who may have gone directly to Virginia.

But after one generation, most of them moved on.
The first place they moved to was the Valley of Virginia - the Shenandoah Valley, which runs between two arms of the Appalachians.
Two of William's sons (David and James) remained in Pennsylvania; the ones who went to Virginia were: Samuel, Hugh, John and William.
Also in the same general area were Nathan and his sons John and James.

Nathan's grandsons seem to have moved to South Carolina, and then on to Tennessee and points beyond.
A couple of William II's sons also moved to Carolina - but maybe North Carolina, and then to Tennessee and then at least one to Kentucky.
Samuel Lusk possibly moved on to North Carolina, and one of his possible sons moved on to Amite County, Missouri.
Hugh Lusk possibly moved on to North Carolina, or possibly to Kentucky (there are Hughs in both places).

We suspect that our Samuel Lusk is the son of one of these people, but have only guesses as to which one. (The best guess is Hugh.) At any rate, our Samuel, born about 1747 in the Valley, lived all of his life there. His sons moved westward, deeper into the western Appalachians, to where Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia meet today. Then in the late 1820s, our group moved up into Kentucky proper.

Much of what we know about the early Lusks in Virginia comes from "Chalkley's Chronicles"
[Chalkley, Lyman. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish settlement in Virginia : extracted from the original court records of Augusta County, 1745-1800. (Baltimore : Genealogical Pub. Co., 1989)."Originally published: 1912." ], which is a collection of abstracts of documents from the area. This is available online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/

Although the first white settlers in the Valley were Germans from Pennsylvania, Chalkley abstracts only records containing Scots-Irish names - sometimes German names are included, but only accidentally, because they happen to occur in a Scots-Irish document.

There is no Federal census for Virginia for 1790 or for 1800 (burned by the British in the War of 1812). There are some substitutes (tax lists and so forth) but mostly for 1790.
There is a census for 1810, but not for Tazewell County (which is where our people were living then). However, Netti Schreiner-Yantis has done an abstracting similar to Chalkley's for Tazewell County. [Archives of the pioneers of Tazewell County, Virginia. Transcribed and edited by Netti Schreiner-Yantis. (Springfield, Va., c1973)]
