Owen, Ralph Albert Dornfeld,. Descendants of John Owen of Windsor, Connecticut (1622-1699); a genealogy, edited by Ralph Dornfeld Owen. [Philadelphia, 1941] - I haven’t looked at this book yet, but it apparently is the major source for this branch of the family.

I have been researching the ancestry of John Owen of Windsor CT for some time, and am quite discouraged at all the inaccuracies in his "pedigree" that so many have assumed to be true, with little or no documentation. Throughout all my research, unfortunately, I have come up with far more questions than answers, but here are the biggest problems I have:
1. Almost all the pedigrees I see list Richard Owen and Joanna Pitt as his parents. Where is the documentation?? The only proof of their existence I have found is a baptismal record for their daughter Joana at Westbury, Shropshire, England in 1638 (not 1625 as most lineages state). No John mentioned anywhere, or any other children for that matter.
2. The Owen family of course originates from Wales, where a patrynymic naming system existed for centuries (John ap Owen ap Hugh, etc). Only in the very late 1500's to early 1600's did the English "forename/surname" system gradually creep into use. I find it highly unlikely that John Owen's ancestors were using "Owen" as a surname as far back as the early 1500's, let alone the 14th century.
3. All the supposed "pedigrees" I've come across list a "David Owen", b. about 1500 at Oswestry, as John Owen's 2nd gr. grandfather. This David Owen was allegedly married to Alice Blount Oxenbridge, whose son was David Lloyd Owen. Here's the problem: Even the most brief research reveals that the David Owen who married Alice Blount Oxenbridge is actually Sir David Owen, Knight of Pembrokeshire, who is in reality the illegitimate son of Owen Tudor, founder of the Tudor Dynasty. Alice Blount, his wife, was married to another knight, Sir Thomas Oxenbridge, who died prior to her marriage to Sir David Owen. Furthermore, every available historical source states that although Sir David Owen had children by his two other wives, Mary de Bohun and Anne Devereaux, he had absolutely no children by Alice Blount.
That's just the short list, but it's clear that the accepted lineage for John Owen of Windsor, Connecticut has some serious problems. I'm not enthused about being back at square one, but I would much rather have genuine proof than guess. So, if anyone has some answers to these questions or even some theories I'd be really excited to hear them. I have some of my own, but that's a subject for another post :)
