Children of Jonathan Owen and Mary Brewster

Jonathan | Joseph | Ruth | Ebenezer | Nathaniel | George | two unknown females
Randall Owen gives Jonanthan and Mary four additional children, Caleb, b ~1691 (m Elizabeth Brewster - one son), Joshua, b 1692 - d 1769 (m Margaret Woodworth - ch Jemima, Leonard, Elijah, and Keziah), Ann, b 9 Nov 1693, and Aaron b 1696

Jonathan (~1690 Brookhaven - 1759)
There apparently is some confusion (and why not? - everything else is confused) between this fellow and the Jonathan who married Bethia Terry.  Hook says they are different people because (a) Jonathan married Bethia Terry at Southold rather than Brookhaven (although this fellow married his 2nd wife at Southold -?), and (b) this Jonathan was in Connecticut at the time Jonathan-married-to-Bethia was in Orange County.
           m (bef 1703) Mary Unknown (bef 1689 CT - bef 1718 CT)
                        doesn't this seem a little young - Jonathan 13???
m 2 (1718 Southold, Suffolk, NY) Rachel Woodworth
She was b Westchester, d 1768 - d/o Benjamin Woodworth and Hannah Damon

No info at all about him in the Hook article.
I had confused him with the man Hook identifies as the son of Jonathan and Bethia Terry Owen - and other people have made Nathaniel s/o Jonathan and Bethia the father of our Jonathan!

Nathaniel (~1712 Bedford, Westchester) - 1763 Orange Co, NY)
      Notes from Hook:
probably but not proved son of Jonathan. Little has been ascertained about this man and his possible family, and we merely assemble here a few records which may pertain to him and to his probable sons, Jonathan and Nathaniel

Nathaniel Owen died intestate in Orange County in 1763 and letters of administration on his estate were granted to Samuel Jones, 1 Dec 1763 [NY Wills, 6:448]

A Jonathan Owen on 27 Dec 1763 witnessed a deed of "Bridget Jones, John Jones and Thomas Jones executrix and executors of the last will and testament of Evan Jones, Surgeon, late of Hermitage in the County of Ulster" that conveyed land to Samuel Brewster which ahd been in his possession "for the past year."

A Nathaniel Owen enlisted as a militiaman from Suffolk Co, LI, NY - 18 Apr 1758, in Capt Alexander Smiths Company. A Nathaniel Owen was registered Oct 1769 as a member of the Goshen Presbyterian Church. A Nathaniel Owen, Jr, witnessed a deed of Nathaniel and Nancy Owen, 11 May 1784 (see Nathaniel s/o Jonathan s/o John), and unless a son of that Nathaniel who died before he made his will, must have belonged to a cognate branch of the family. A Nathaniel Owen served from Ulster County in the Rev. and a Nathaniel Owen is shown in the 1790 census at Walkill, Ulster, NY - 2m 16+, 2m 16-, 3 f, 2 slaves.

George (1716 Brookhaven - Aug 1770 Goshen, Orange, NY)
                                       m Elizabeth Unknown
Apparently there were 4 or 5 men of this name in the Brookhaven records. The assumption of a George son of Jonathan is based on the fact that after the passing of eleven years (1725-1736) without mention of a George in the records, one came prominently into the records about the time that Jonathan departed from them. In those days it ws common to elevate the son of a long prominent citizen to the position of his father when the latter, because of age, withdrew. (Hook's explanation)
      Notes from Hook:
1736 May 4 - George Owen elected Trustee of Brookhaven
2 May 1737 - assessor and Trustee (this is the last year that Capt Jonathan was elected trustee)
14 Feb 1738 Capt Jonathan Owen and George Owen were the only Trustees to join with 28 other inhabitants in a petition protesting against creating a sheep pasture in the town. [Brookhaven TR, C:185,   187] Being the only Trustees to sign may imply a close connection between them.
1740 - George Owen elected Trustee
1741 - George Owen (called Leftenant Owen) elected Trustee
      1745 - assessor
1749-1753 - commissioner of roads (with John Brewster) - called Captain.
1758 - on Brookhaven rate list - last appearance in records except for
1767 June 15 - "meadow formerly possessed by George Owen" was mentioned
Hook thinks he and John Brewster moved to Orange Co, NY about 1760, and he died soon after -
by 1767 the record indicates that he had either died or removed before that date.
A George Owen died in Orange Co in Aug, 1770 - will names wife Elizabeth, son George, other children not named.
There may have been in the family of this George the Nathaniel who enlisted in Capt Alexander Smith's Co of Suffolk Co Militia, 18 Apr 1758.
There was a Samuel Owen who in 1743 "hath taken his grandfather's mark" the description of which is identical with the one which was given Jonathan on 20 Jan 1692.
