This page has been rewritten. During my last trip to the library, I found a couple of articles on the Owen family which corrected some of my mistakes. Una Bowman, who gave me so much help on the Browns, has once again shared her research, as has Joan Henry, a descendant of Jonathan's son William, and Ann Miller Carr, a relative of the Holmeses.
The articles:
Hook, James William. "The Owen Family of Suffolk, Orange and Westchester Counties, New York." The American Genealogist, v 30 #3 (119) July 1954, pp 129-142, and v 31 #1 (121) January 1955 pp. 33-49.
Swick, Harriet J. “The House of Owen.”Yesteryears, v 9 #36 (June 1966) pp 180- 82.
Note - Occasionally you will find an additional 4 children listed for Jonathan and Eleanor - ie Nancy, Alanson, Harry and Caroline. I believe there has been a little generational mix-up, and they are the children of Nathaniel (grandchildren of Jonathan).

Various narratives about Nathaniel:
“From the History of Schuyler and Tompkins Counties, we read that Lieut Jonathan Owen and the eldest son Nathaniel emigrated to Central New York near Perry City, Schuyler Co., in 1804. Having served in the Revolution and entitled to a military lot he settled in Ulysses and deeded half of this lot to his son Nathaniel. This home is still standing. It was owned in later years by the parents of Florence Swartout Jeffers and pre-owned by the Temple Burlings. Nathaniel cleared his plot of land and erected a rude shanty home covered with bark. After the harvest he returned to Middletown, Orange Co. to make preparations to move his wife Mehitable Tucker and son William returning to Ulysses in 1799.”
-- Swick, Harriet J. “The House of Owen” published in Yesteryears, v 9 #36 (June 1966); p. 181
The Nathaniel Owens were the parents of seven children: William, Eleanor, Nancy, Alanson, Harry and Jonathan. The Meckleburg, NY Cemetery records show Nathaniel died Sept 6, 1862 and Mehetable in 1864. . . . Jonathan married Lucinda Newhall, raising four children: Henry, Nancy, Elizabeth and Nathaniel. . . . Eleanor Owen married Henry Rudy in 1824 at the home of her uncle Jonathan.
–Ibid, p. 182
Jonathan (p. 4) Owen took up a tract of government land, it is thought a mile square for himself and some of his sons, in Tompkins County. His oldest son, Nathaniel, bought several hundred acres of the same and sold off to settlers what he did not want for himself. He brought with him in his vest pocket some apple seeds which he planted and raised an orchard from them. A few of the trees are still standing and fruit bearing. [the pamphlet is dated 10th month 1907- and it isn’t clear to me whether it was Jonathan or Nathaniel who carried the apple seeds].
---“Geneology” by Frelove Owen Pyle
Captain Jonathan Owen was an officer in the Revolution, and entitled to a military lot. He lived at Middletown, N.Y. William Bodle, Sr., the father of James, Jonathan, and William Bodle, Jr., was a neighbor, and he traded a horse with a soldier for his claim. In locating, one lot was selected in Ulysses, near the present site of Waterbury*, and where Captain Jonathan Owen afterwards settled. The other lot was No. 65, in Hector township. They divided their lots, each taking the half of the lot. Mr. Owen selected the north half of lot 65, and gave it to his oldest son, Nathaniel. In the summer of 1798, Nathaniel, recently married to Miss Mehitable Tucker, came here, cleared a small plat of ground, planted it with corn, erected a rude shanty covered with bark, which he finished during the season. After harvest he returned to his home in Middletown, and made preparations for moving to his abode in the wilderness. In the spring of 1799, loading one horse with his wife and child, clothing, etc., started for his forest home. The place on which he settled is where Thomas W. Thompson, Deacon Henry Owen, and William B. Reynolds now live, and the apple-trees in their orchards were raised from seed brought by him in his vest pocket from Orange County. His nearest neighbors were the Smiths, at Peach Orchard, and the Trowbridges, at Perry. The Indians were very friendly, and many a wrestling match did he have with them, and invariably came off victorious. They gave him the appellation of the “Stout Yankee.” The Indians often borrowed a large iron kettle of him in the morning, and at night returned it with about a quart of salt, but would never reveal the location of the spring from which they obtained the salt water. Mr. Owen raised a family of seven children, -- four sons and three daughters, -- William, Jonathan, Eleanor, Nancy, Alanson, Harry, and Caroline. Harry resides on the old homestead. Eleanor married Henry Rudy, and lives near Trumansburg. Nancy married Charles Cressman, and resides in Mecklenburg. Caroline married Jonas R. Neate, who died in Washington, D.C., in 1863; afterwards married Nathan Fitzgerald, and now resides on lot 64. Nathaniel Owen died Sept. 6, 1862, at the age of eighty-nine years, and his wife at seventy.

Nathaniel OWENS - A Nathaniel Owen was the first settler in this area of Hector in 1798, was from Orange County, N.Y., was the son of Capt. Jonathan Owen (an officer in the Revolution), lived in Hector 65, was married to Mahitabel Tucker, fought in the War of 1812, died in 1862 at age 89 years, and was buried in Mecklenburg Cemetery. His wife Mahetabel died in 1846 at age 70 years and was buried in Mecklenburg Cemetery. Note: There were at least two Nathaniel Owens in the area at this time; both were from Orange County; however, they appear to be only distantly related. (See page one of this census.)

2. William (20 Feb 1775, Middletown, Orange, NY- 1855 PA probably)
William is a bit of a problem. He is not mentioned in the abstract of Jonathan's will posted online, but according to Hook's article he was named in it. "His [Jonathan's] will was written at Ulysses, 19 Aug 1814 . . . . It named all the children mentioned below . . . .[including William] " This, I think, is a simple transcription error, and can be fixed if anyone gets hold of the actual will. He is listed in the Jonathan Owen (b 1783) Bible.
The real problem arises because Nathaniel Owen, son of Jonathan and Bethia, also had a son named William. According to Hook, that William married Elsie McCord, the woman some people list as the wife of this William.
Is the confusion total yet? Well then - Hook says William s/o Nathaniel "may have removed to Pennsylvania after his wife's death" - and the same may be said about our William.
According to Frelove Owen Pyle "The whole family, excepting William, emigrated to the central part of the State of New York in the year 1804." And that is all I've found about him in any of the articles I've seem about Jonathan's descendants.
Fortunately, I recently received an e-mail from Joan Henry, a descendant of William's, who provided me with more information. She had found an obit for Hudson Owen, son of William and Nancy McCord, whose "paternal grandfather . . . was Jonathan Owen, a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, who died in 1814." Obits are not always accurate - there were mistakes in my own father’s obit - but Joan has reason to suspect this particular one was written by the husband of Hudson’s grand-daughter, so that adds to the probability that it is accurate. I have used the information provided by Joan to fill this outline for our William.
1775 Feb 20 - born
1790 census - with parents in Walkill, Ulster, New York
1xxx - m Elsie McCord - according to Joan Henry, her name was Nancy - they had 4 children - including Hudson.
According to Hudson's obit, William was a tanner by trade and owned property in Middletown - which was a part of Wallkill Precinct - so I am not certain about these census listings

1819 - moved to Wyoming Co, PA, seven miles below Tunkhannock, where he bought a farm and resided until about three years before his death, when he came to live with his son, Hudson, at Berwick, where he died in 1855.

3. Joseph Kortwright (1777/1785, Middletown, Orange, NY - aft. 1814)
Joseph’s birthdate is not recorded in the Jonathan Owen (b 1783) Bible, but he is mentioned in his father’s will. I do not know where the date 1777 comes from; if he is the Joseph K who shows up in Ohio, then the date (from his age on censuses) is ~1785.
I also don’t know where the “Kortright” for his second name comes from. I know it’s his mother’s last name, but I’ve never seen a document with it written out completely although he almost always goes by Joseph K. There was a Joseph Keen living in Wallkill at the time the Owenses lived there, and I have wondered if he might have been named after him for some reason.
Please realize that all of this is speculation and possibilities.
1777 - born
1790 census - with parents in Walkill, Ulster, New York
1800 census - with parents in Walkill, Orange, New York
1806 - a Joseph Owen was added to the jury list in Seneca county
but it could have been Nathaniel’s son Joshua (the one who married Zipporah Winter). Frelove Owen Pyle says all the family except William moved to Cayuga/Seneca/Tompkins county, but it is possible that Joseph also stayed on in Orange county, at least for a while. (Or perhaps he moved with the family, then went back to Orange Co?) I received (Dec. 2006) an email from a descendant of Joseph's through his daughter Sarah Jane - who was born 2 May 1810 in Orange Co, NY - and there seems to be a good candidate for this Joseph in Orange county for the next two censuses. In 1830 he appears in Tompkins county, and after that he is possibly in Ohio.

The DAR application of Lulu Waltenbaugh lists Moses Brown as the husband of Mary Owen.]

6. Susannah (12 Jan 1782, Middletown, Orange NY)
1782 Jan 12 / 1781 Nov 12? - born
1790 census - with parents in Walkill, Ulster, New York
1800 census - with parents in Walkill, Orange, New York
180x - m David (Daniel) Brown
You would think I would know who this Daniel Brown was, but I don’t. Daniel was a name in the Moses Brown family - but although Moses had (probably) 4 brothers, the only name we are fairly certain of is Thomas. There are two (unfortunately) good possibilities -
One buried at the Stillwell Farm Cemetery (Ulysses, Tompkins, NY - but the cemetery compilers think it was Hector) - dates Dec 28, 1779 - March 28, 1860 with a wife Susan buried next to him, dates Nov. 12, 1781 - Sept. 17, 1839 - and note the Bible record has our Susannah being born Jan 12, 1782 - a misreading (of either document or stone) is possible.
Two (Daniel J) wrote a will in 1840 which was probated in 1849, when he was 50 years old. He has a wife Susannah, sons Gideon and William, daughters Samantha, Susan, Catherine and Elizabeth. He/they are buried at the Burdett Baptist Cemetery (Hector, Schuyler, NY) - and the dates, either on the stones or in the will book, are definitely off. Daniel’s are: died 21 Feb 1849, age 66, 5, 14 (not anywhere close to 50!) - which gives him a birth date of 7 Sep 1782; wife Susannah’s dates: died 12 June 1842, age 66, 1, 4, yielding a birth date of 8 May 1776. [Note: Una has the Burdett Cemetery reading as died 12 June 1847 - which would make her birth year 1781.]

And that’s all I’ve got. And it is entirely possible that neither of these candidates is the actual Susannah Owen. Two of her brothers went to Ohio, at least for a while; her sister Mary Polly, who married the (possible) brother of Susannah’s husband, went to Pennsylvania - and there are Daniel Browns in both of those places (but not near enough to be certain-sure). There are also other Daniel Browns in Tompkins county - so -
And as far as that goes, maybe she got married in Orange County, and didn’t move to Cayuga/Seneca/Tompkins until later. In 1810, brother William (and possibly brother Joseph K) is still in Orange Co - and there was a Daniel Brown there as well:
1810 NY Orange Wallkill 485
Daniel Brown 00110 00010
And as far using Owen Brown to make an identification, well - there have been Owen Browns in all the censuses, starting with the first, an Owen from Connecticut. So the Owen Brown living so conveniently near to Daniel might not actually be related either.

According to many online genealogies, Jonathan's sister Eleanor married Daniel Holmes. This marriage is pretty late for that - could a young Owen woman have married a cousin with the same name as her uncle? -
The answer is yes, indeedy: email 5 Nov 2008 from Ann Miller Carr -"This Daniel Holmes, b. 13 Dec 1814 in Covert, Seneca Co., NY, was the son of Stephen and Nancy Woodworth Holmes. This Daniel and at least two of his brothers, Walter (my husband's ancestor) and Gilbert removed to Fairfield Twp., Huron Co., Ohio. Daniel and Lufanny seem to have been childless. I have Lufanny's death date as 05 Jan 1852 . . . .Lufanny's husband Daniel had an uncle named Daniel Holmes. This Daniel Holmes, b. abt. 1780, seems to be the one married to Eleanor Owen. Stephen Holmes and this Daniel Holmes seem to be sons of Asa Holmes, who died in Milo just one month before Stephen Holmes died. Stephen is living next door to Asa in one of the censuses."

I believe this is actually this Eleanor's niece (the daughter of Jonathan), and I would have assumed a generational mix-up, but it was Jonathan’s will that called Eleanor wife of Daniel Holmes - so apparently two Owens women married two Daniel Holmeses
email 5 Nov 2008 from Ann Miller Carr -"This Daniel Holmes [who married Lufanny], b. 13 Dec 1814 in Covert, Seneca Co., NY, was the son of Stephen and Nancy Woodworth Holmes. Nothing further known - There are a lot of Daniel Holmeses out there, but the ones in 1850 don’t seem to be our fellow - and the earlier ones, well, there is no real way to choose. They might have gone to Ohio? There is a couple (with no children) there, in 1840:

from a County History:
Benjamin Coddington was a solider of the Revolution. In 1803 he came to this State from New Jersey, having emigrated from England, and settled in the northeast part of this town, on land now owned by the heirs of Le Roy Baker. His son, John M. Coddington, was born in Fishing Creek, Northunberland Co., Pa., in 1787; came here with his father; remained with him until June, 1806, when he started for West Bloomfield, Ontario Co., intending to work by the month for Jasper Sears, leaving here with his wardrobe and provisions in his knapsack, and only three sixpenny pieces in his pocket for the expenses of the entire journey.
The first night he arrived at Seneca River, paid a ferry-man a sixpence for carrying him across, and remained overnight with him, sleeping up-stairs on the floor. He resumed his journey next morning, and passed through Geneva, then a small hamlet, and reaching the State road, followed it to Canandaigua. There he bought a lunch, consisting of gingerbread and a glass of beer, which cost him another sixpence, and arrived at his destination the second night. He worked for Mr. Sears until the latter part of September, when he returned home, and remained (PAGE 622)
here until 1810, working for whom he could and by the job.*
He then settled on the farm where he now lives, having contracted for fifty acres of land in 1807, paying $4 per acre. He was married Feb. 22, 1810, to Sally Owen, and moved into a little log cabin without either door, window, or upper floor, until 1826, when he built the house he now occupies.
He, with his boys, cleared up the farm of one hundred and seventy-five acres, which was heavily timbered with pine, oak, and maple. He owned at one time all but sixty acres of land between his house and Mecklenburg, -- a distance of two miles. He took his chances in four different drafts in the war of 1812, and escaped each time. In the first years of his residence here, they went to the mill at Goodwin’s Point, on the west shore of Cayuga Lake.
His first wife died in 1864, at the age of seventy-five years, they having lived together fifty-four years. In 1871, he was married to Elizabeth, widow of Calvin Jewel, with whom he still lives. He has had a family of ten children, -- six boys and four girls; three sons and three daughters are still living. His first vote for President was cast for James Madison, and he has voted at every presidential election since, and has filled positions in town with honor to himself.
In 1840, in company with the Darlings, he went to Potter Co., Pa., deer-hunting, and stayed seven days, and brought home thirteen deer. In 1860 he made his last deer-hunt, at the age of seventy-three years. He still keeps the old rifle with which he has killed many a deer, and has repeatedly killed two deer at one shot. He is still living, in his ninety-second year.
