South Carolina Land

Besides records involving Robertses, there are some for Davises and Carters.
(Jesse's wife was Margaret Davis; his mother was Effie Carter)

Some things I didn't understand:
Quit Rent = annual assessment due to the King as grantor from each and every person who had obtained land by grant from the King. In the case of land obtained by purchase or inheritance, the liability for payment of the Quit Rent fell to each successive land owner. A stated amount of Quit Rent was included in each of the land grants. (During later period ie 1768 the amount was 4 sh/acre in Proclamation Money or 3sh stg/100 acres). Examination of the Quit Rent books disclose that many persons did NOT make their payments every year; some tracts had QR payments overdue by 20 or more years. Under terms of the Bounty Acts, “foreign Protestants” were exempt from QR for 10 yrs given them by the colony “on the Bounty.” (This info from Warren, Mary B. Citizens & Immigrants, SC, 1768. (Athens, GA: Heritage Papers, 1994). p. 255)
Lease and Release = A species of conveyance, invented by Serjeant Moore, soon after the enactment of the statute of uses. It is thus contrived; a lease, or rather bargain and sale, upon some pecuniary consideration, for one year, is made by the tenant of the freehold to the lessee or bargainee. This, without any enrollment, makes the bargainor stand seised to the use of the bargainee, and vests in the bargainee the use of the term for one year, and
then the statute immediately annexes the possession. Being thus in possession, he is capable of receiving a release of the freehold and reversion, which must be made to the tenant in possession; and, accordingly, the next day a release is granted to him.
2. The lease and release, when used as a conveyance of the fee, have the joint operation of a single conveyance. 2 Bl. Com. 339; 4 Kent, Com. 482; Co. Litt. 207; Cruise, Dig. tit. 32, c. 11.

Holcomb, Brent. Petitions for land from the South Carolina Council journals [Columbia, S.C. : SCMAR ; Columbia, S.C. : B.H. Holcomb [distributor], 1996-]
As you will see, the early volumes include paraphrases of the actual petitions, but as time went on, the entries became less and less prolix, until eventually they were just lists of names, amount of land desired, and occasionally locations.  There were several steps involved (and I'm not clear on all of them) - you had to get a warrant for a survey, then a survey, then you had to have the survey certified - so sometimes when the same people are mentioned, it might not be for a separate piece of land, but for a separate step in the process - although people did not seem to be shy about asking for more land.
