I. Very Early Robertses
There are four Robertses mentioned in Agnes Baldwin’s “First Settlers of South Carolina.”
[Baldwin, Agnes Leland. First settlers of South Carolina, 1670-1700. (Easley, S.C. : Southern Historical Press, 1985)]
1. George Roberts, a servant, arrived with the First Fleet, which means early in 1670, either March, when the Carolina arrived (although he is not on the list of passengers published by Victoria Proctor), or in late May, when the people from the Three Brothers, which had been blown off course to Virginia, finally arrived. He apparently took out a warrant for land; I haven’t looked up that record yet, but that is the source cited by Baldwin. I have not found a will for him, so I don’t know if he left any children or not.
2. Edward Roberts, arrived from Barbados in Feb 1670/1, a year after the colony was established. He died after less than a year; his will, which was proved 9 Dec 1671, does not mention any children - or any siblings.

3. Thomas Roberts, who appears to have been the wealthiest of these early Robertses, arrived from Scotland sometime before 1682. He was a ship captain, part owner of Lord Cardross’s ship Stephen, and he was a “planter.” There is a Thomas Roberts who left a will in 1740; somehow I missed it when I was looking up the early wills. : - (
for census records (and I know, that's 100 years late), see SC Roberts, part 2 (I haven't sorted them out yet)
4. John Roberts, arrived before 13 May 1697. He apparently took out a warrant for land also (that is the source cited by Baldwin). There is a will for a John Roberts in 1730, but I am not sure it is the same person:

II. The Huguenots 1686 ->
These were actually Roberts without the final s. They were part of the French settlement at St James Santee, which was mostly on the southern side of the river. (The Santee was the border between the Georgetown and Charleston Districts.) Eventually the French spread to the northern side and intermarried with the (later) Welsh and Scots-Irish of the Pee Dee area. The records are mostly good about referring to them as “Robert” but I suspect that any later Roberts with the first name of Peter is actually a Robert.
“The first French minister known to have officiated at St. James Santee was the Rev. Pierre Robert (1656-1715), a refugee of Swiss birth, who came to the province in 1686 with Captain Phillippe Gendron and settled on French Santee. . . .
“According to tradition Mr. Robert was the first person in the Santee frontier settlement to own a horse, which enabled him to cover the distances through the forest to the homes of his congregation.”
Note 15 - one of his descendants was Henry Martyn Robert (1837-1923) - Robert’s Rules of Order
Note 16 - Rev Robert was the son of Daniel and Marie Robert. The register of the old Huguenot church in Basle, Switzerland, recorded the baptism of his son Pierre, May 9, 1675, and his ordination, February 19, 1682. His wife’s name was Jeanne Broye.
St. James Santee, plantation parish : history and records, 1685-1925 / Anne Baker Leland Bridges, Roy Williams, III. (Spartanburg, S.C. : Reprint Company, Publishers, 1997) p. 28
Here are some random records I found referring to this group. I didn’t do a lot of looking in the records of the Proprietary period, but I did find these three:
sometime before 1701 - Peter Robert - appraisal for Nicholas Neud
In French - 1701 Jan 25 - agreement between
1. Pierre Robert, minister of the gospel, native of St Jmier, Switzerland, now of Santee River in Craven County
and
2. Pierre Robert, of Bale, Switzerland, son of Pierre & Jeanne Bayle his wife
on the subject of the marriage of son and Ann Marie Louise Le Grand, d/o etc etc
Basically he gives his son ½ of all his possessions, but they are to hold them in common
sometime after 1701 - forgot date - Pierre Robert buys 200, 40, 250 acres, Santee
Records of the secretary of the Province of South Carolina,1692-1721 / compiled and edited by Caroline T. Moore. [s.l. : s.n.], c1978 (Columbia, S.C. : R. L. Bryan Co.)
According to the biography given above, the elder Pierre died in 1715, so the Pierre/Peter sr that appears after that date must be his son, and the Pierre/Peter jr his grandson. ???
In 1720, Peter Robert was on the Grand Jury (no location given), and Peter Roberts was on the Petit Jury. In 1731, in St James Santee, both Peter jr & sr were on the Grand Jury, Peter jr was on the Petit Jury - and a JAMES Roberts was also on the Petit Jury for that year.
There is a will on file for Peter (Pierre) Robert in the 1729-31 period. It appears to be the will of the son of the minister (who baptized his -Peter jr's-now-sr - son James). So the Peter who appears after this is presumably the grandson of the original Pierre? A Peter Robert appeared on both the Grand and Petit Juries for St James Santee for 1737, 1751, 1757. Then there is an estate inventory (for Peter Robert’s estate) in1767; there is notice of an administrator being appointed for the estate of Peter Roberts of St James Santee in 1775 and of Peter Robert of Charleston in 1781. There is also the complication of an arrival from Acadia of another Peter Robert in 1755, so it becomes fairly murky sorting them all out. Eventually, there is a Peter Robert/s in the Beaufort District which is in the very south of South Carolina.
~~~~~~~~~~
The only son mentioned for the first Pierre Robert (that I have found so far) was Pierre jr. But if we include the Robertses who were mostly known in the records as Robert, who lived near the Santee River, whose first name was Peter, who had dealings with each other or with people who sound like Frenchmen, then we have several other possible descendants/relatives: Peter, Elias, James, John, David, Jonah. Et voila! When I looked up Pierre Robert on Rootsweb World Connect, I found all those names included in his immediate family except for David and Jonah, who might have come along later on.
Peter Robert
According to various Rootsweb files, Pierre/Peter, son of Pierre the minister, was born May 1675.
“Pierre Robert was a commissioner at St Jamestown in 1706, a Justice of Peace in 1721, a church Warden in 1731, and at his death in 1731 he left large unappraised landholdings, as well as a personal estate apprasied at almost five thousand pounds, inclusive of books, furniture, tools, cattle,hogs, sheep, horses, and 16,100 pounds,"neet river rice"” [This note is from the Masland Family Tree.]
He married (1) Anne Marie Le Grand (the contract with his father, above, is for his marriage with her). They had one son, Pierre/Peter 1704-40. He married (2) Judith de Bordeaux Videaul; they had three children: Jacques de Bordeaux aka James, Elizabeth who married Elias Jaudon, and Madeline.
Elias Robert
As you can see, there is only one early record for Elias Robert (that I have found so far). According to the various Rootsweb files, Pierre the minister did have a son Elias, but there is little agreement after that. Most say he was born after the arrival in America (ie aft. 1686), but one gives him a birthdate of 1679 - and no one is sure when he died (the estimates range from 1687 -1780). Some give him a son, Abraham, b ~1709
Jacques de Bordeaux Robert also had a son Elias, 1745-1820 (according to the Rootsweb files), so the later fellow might be him. This Elias married Mary Rue, and had 4 children: Thomas (married Mary Polly Judd Harvey), John, Elias/Elisha, and Mary.
John Robert
According to the Rootsweb files, Jean/John Robert, the son of Pierre the minister, was born ~1687 and died 25 Jan 1760. He married Elizabeth Margaret Dixon; they had a son John (1709-1791). There were plenty of other Johns around as well, including the early one in St Bart’s Parish, but these are the records I am fairly sure refer to the Huguenots - there may be more (see below). After 1760, the John Robert might be this John’s son, or it might be his nephew, son of Jacques de Bordeaux Robert, who had a brother Elias and a brother James.
James Robert
The first James Robert listed in the Rootsweb files is Jacques de Bordeaux, aka James, son of Pierre/Peter and his second wife Judith de Bordeaux Videaul, grandson of Pierre the minister. His dates are 1711-1774; he married Sarah Jaudon; their children were: Elias, James (m Ann Grimball), John, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Judith (one file also gives them another son Peter (Capt.), who married Ann Grimball). After that, they multiply rapidly, and I have not sorted them out.
From various Roberts GenForum postings, it would seem that this James was the son of James Roberts (b~1690) and Cordelia Edwards. It is also claimed that he was born ~1720, and was a Captain in the Rev War. He married Amy Creech (Ann could be a typo for Amy on my part). He had land in Dobbs Co, NC (tax list there in 1769, listing 2 sons) as well as in St George Parish, GA. One posting gives the dates for some of his sons:
III. The John Roberts Barony.
You find references to this in histories of the early days in South Carolina.[ EG - “On the Catfish stream there was within Queensborough Township a barony which eluded the tax collector many years. It was laid out to John Roberts adjoining Monck’s large acreage on the eastern side, in the year 1735. People squatted on it and refused to pay the state or the poor any contributions.” p. 61 “The larger tracts on the PeeDee and its tributaries were granted to . . . John Roberts. . . . John Roberts got a whole barony and it passed into other hands and remained intact for years." (~1730s?) - p. 66 Cook, H. T. Rambles in the PeeDee Basin, South Carolina. (Columbia SC: The State Co, 1926) (Southern Historical Press, Greenville, SC)] I have never seen an explanation of what exactly it is, so I have made guesses from the records I have seen. (And I didn’t go out of my way to track down ALL the records, since I very much doubt we are related to this man.)
OK - In 1663, Charles II granted vast tracts of land, which included both the Carolinas as well as Georgia, to 8 people. One of these “Lord Proprietors” was Sir George Carteret. In 1735 John Roberts was referred to as “assignee to the Rt. Honble John Lord Carteret.” My guess, therefore, is that Roberts bought at least some of the property given to George Carteret from one of his eventual heirs, and that that is what constitutes the “John Roberts Barony.”
An index to the deeds of the province and state of South Carolina, 1719-1785, and Charleston district, 1785-1800. [Easley, S.C. : Southern Historical Press, 1977] contains two possibly pertinent entries:
John Roberts from John Carteret L&R L 223 1732-3
John Roberts from John Carteret L&R L 230 1732-3
It also has an entry concerning an earlier attorney for Roberts:
Roberts, John John Gascoigne Power atty K 200 1731-3
This property seems to have been a continual source of trouble to JR. The 1735 reference (below) is to a memorial written to the governor, requesting that he (the governor) not give clear title to various people who wanted to claim bits of the land. That decision went against him, but I think later his ownership of the remaining land was reaffirmed. Since I’m not good at legal language and may have misunderstood what was going on, here are the two references:
9 May 1735 - read Memorial of Captain George Anson, attorney to John Roberts, Esqr, assignee to the Rt. Honble John Lord Carteret. Took the same into Consideration and Resolved that whereas the two Baronys mentioned in the said memorial have some time since been run out by virtue of his Late Ex’cys Warrant De Bene Esse and platts thereof returned into the Surveyor Gen’ls Office and no reason appearing to this Board why the Surveyor General should not certifye the same or that the said Plats so Certifyed can give any Now or Additional force to the Grants from the late Lords Proprietors to the R’t Hon’ble The Lord Carteret for the same. Orderd that the surveyor General do certify the said Platts provided they are surveyd and returned agreeable to His Majestys Instructions relating to Lands.
30 Sep 1736 - His Majestys Hon’ble Council took into Consideration the Motion made by Mrs Whitaker and Capt Charles Wyndham in behalf of John Roberts Esqr concerning Lands convey’d by the Hon’ble the Lord Carteret to him the said Roberts in this Province. Resolved that the Motion is just and consonent to His Majestys Instructions and Orderd that Mr. Secretary Hammerton do prepare a Grant for the overplus of Land according to a Draught layd before this Board, which was approved of in order the same may be signd by the Honble the Lieutent Governor.
Holcomb, Brent. Petitions for land from the South Carolina Council journals. (Columbia, S.C. : SCMAR ; Columbia, S.C. : B.H. Holcomb [distributor], 1996)
Later on, he had still more trouble (unless this is the same trouble)
1739 May 8 -
Benjamin Whitaker Esq’r enters a Caveat on behalf of John Roberts in the Kingdom of Great Britain, Esquire, against any grant passing to any person or persons and particularly against the heirs of assigns of Colo Purry deceased for any Lands within the supposed lines of the Township of Purrisburgh , the said Lands having been laid out to the Right Hon. The Lord Carteret whose assignee the said John Roberts, before the Township of Purrisburgh was laid out or ascertained. 7 May 1739. Benjamin Whitaker.On reading the petition of Mr. Charles Peter Purry and the above Caveat Enterd by Mr. Whitaker, it is ordered that Mr. Whitaker do attend tomorrow at Tthree o’clock precisely to give his reasons why Grants should not pass to the said Charles Purry for the Land he claims.
Holcomb, op cit
And then I didn’t copy the next page!!! (it would be 134 in this book). It would seem, however, that the decision again went against him:
6 Mar 1753 . . . bounded by land laid out for John Roberts, esq, which land of Roberts was since disclaimed when Purisburgh Twp was laid out which included Roberts & Matthews Tracts - Roberts Tract was by Purrysburgh - warrants surveyed and granted to several gentlemen
Holcomb, op cit (this is mostly a paraphrase)
And that is all I know about the John Roberts Barony. It doesn’t seem to have been a source of profit for him, and he seems never to have set foot on it - but there are plenty of John Robertses in the records, so maybe one is in fact him - or his heir. Our line, by the way, has only two Johns in it (one in 1741, one in 1781), but they are cousins and uncles, so it doesn't seem likely we are related.
