“The author is indebted to Nathaniel Pearce, Esq, of Pawling - who has given considerable attention to the history of the early settlers of his township, - for the statement that Abraham Slocum was a man of superior intellect and good mental culture. He was something of a wit, and, withal, a good hater as Doctor Johnson says - a man who never forgot an insult or forgave an injury. His latter days were clouded by intemperance and his example left its evil impression on some of his children.” (The Slocum book, p. 94)
