The Bakers are not in my direct line, but they were apparently important in the survival of
my Stantons.
Mary Ann Stanton married Thomas Baker - and one of her brothers was living with them in
1860. AND two of her brothers and possibly her mother were living with Thomas Baker's
parents.
AND it is possible that the widowed Mary Stanton married John P. Baker.
I have followed all the Bakers I could find in Warrick County from 1820 until 1850. After
that, I only have information on certain selected Bakers. The ones I am interested in are:
John P Baker (but he disappears after 1851)
James and Leah Hedges Baker and their son
Thomas
- these are, according to Noel Trout, descendants of William Baker, son of John
McCoy Baker.
I am also interested in William Y Baker, son of Thomas Baker (who was
possibly the brother of John McCoy Baker).
WARNING
This information is not exhaustive! This is just info I came across while researching the
Stantons. There is lots more about the Bakers of Warrick to know and find out. My
reconstructions of various families may not be correct.

*** After I painstakingly put together these Bakers as best I could, I came across the DAR file on John Baker of Warrick County (but even at this date, when I have learned to DOCUMENT everything, I forgot to write down who prepared the file), preserved in They Came to Warrick County, Indiana: Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots buried in Warrick County, and some of their descendants (by Opal B. Phillips and Carrie B. Hart. Owensboro, Ky. : Cook-McDowell Publications ; Boonville, Ind. : Capt. Jacob Warrick Chapter, NSDAR, 1980.)

John Baker
According to Noel Trout, there were two John Bakers born in the Carolinas at about the
same time, and they both ended up in Warrick County, Indiana. These were John McCoy
Baker b. ~1760 South Carolina, d. 1839 Warrick Co., and John Armstrong Baker b.
1762 North Carolina, d. 1835 Warrick Co. Also according to Noel, John McCoy Baker
had three (possibly five) sons: Edward (b. 1783), John McCoy jr (b. 1785), and William
(b. 1781) - and on one posting he also lists Thomas and Eben. According to the DAR file,
there was only one John Baker (the one born in North Carolina in 1762), and Edward
(1782) and John (1785) were his sons - but not William.
Quoting from the DAR file: John Baker, Revolutionary Soldier, was born 1762 in North Carolina. His family moved to Abbeville S.C. when he was a small child. He entered service in 1780 from Abbeville and served through 1781, serving under General Pinckney, Col. Anderson and Capt. Joseph Pinckney. He was a volunteer and took part in several skirmishes and one regular battle at Abbeville, S.C. Served as Private and Ranger. After the war he moved to Ross Co., Ohio where he lived for a short time, then on to Giles Co., Tenn, living there 7 or 8 years, coming to Warrick Co. Ind. in 1814. John was married 3 times; 1/m Rachel Bandy, 2/m Mary McCoy and 3/m Chelly Esom on 3-16-1815 in Warrick Co. John d. 10-7-1835 in Warrick Co. and was first buried in the Haines Cem. then removed to Baker Cem. 1935. Pension #25100
note the year of death - the listing in the cemetery book says 1836. It may be just a typo.
There is a John Baker in both the 1820 and 1830 Warrick County federal censuses, but
there is no way to tell which John it is.

John McCoy Baker was, by the way (according to Noel) married to Betsy Unknown, b.
1762 - she would be the old woman living with son Edward in 1850.
Both Johns died before the 1840 census.
One John Baker is in the Baker Cemetery in Boon Twp: Baker, John 7 Oct 1836 - 73y;
SC Mil-Rev W. Presumably this is John Armstring Baker since Noel got his information
about him from his military files.
According to the DAR file, the children of John (presumably Armstrong) Baker are:
with 1st wife Rachel Bandy:
Edward Baker b. 5 December 1782 in South Carolina
John Baker b. 12 March 1785 in South Carolina
Martha Baker b. 17 February 1787
Mary Baker b. 1790

1806 in Chillicothe, Ohio.

This is not the son of Thomas Baker 1784. He is not mentioned in the Bible record,
and he is also too old. I had this problem with another family - a junior who was not
the son of the senior - another researcher told me that in the old days it did not
signify a father-son relationship, but merely an older and younger man of the same
name.

seem to fit this fellow, so.

Thomas Baker
The final Baker in the 1820 Warrick federal census is Thomas, whose Bible record we
have, born 1784. There was an account of a family reunion included in the Bible, in which
it mentioned that Edward - born 1783 - was the nephew of Thomas (b. 1784). I am
making the assumption therefore that this Thomas was a much younger brother of John
McCoy Baker.
Thomas, according to the family Bible, was born February 1784 in South Carolina. His
wife Margaret (from other sources it seems that her last name was Youngblood) was born
18 September 1784.

If this is John P Baker, then his wife must have died sometime not long after the
census. In 1851, John P married a Mary Stantlin - [Marriage Book 2, p. 233 - Baker,
John P. m. Mary Stantlin 23 Nov 1851 - Thomas Fuller, Min] and I suspect"Stantlin" is actually "Stanton" and that she was the widowed mother of my family

P's brother James). It makes everything nice and neat.

I have wondered if William Y Baker's 3rd wife could have been Mary Ann Stanton
Baker (the marriage book just calls her Mary Baker). This census entry seems to
support that guess. However, Mary Ann Stanton is buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery
next to her (1st) husband Thomas. Her dates are given as 1836-1883. The problem
is that there is an obit. for Mary L. Baker, wife of William Y, which was published in
1886. [Boonville Standard - 30 Sep 1886
Died - at the residence of her husband, in Boonville, on Wednesday, at 10 o'clock
a.m., Mary L., wife of Wm. Y. Baker, of consumption, aged 49 years. The burial will
take place at Mt. Gilead, at 12 o'clock to-day. p. 5, col 1.] The age is right for Mary
Ann Stanton, as is the burial place.
William Y Baker's obit:
5 Feb 1897 Boonville Standard p.4, col. 2
One of the oldest citizens of Warrick county, Wm. Y. Baker, died last Saturday at his
DeGronia home. Had he lived for four days longer the deceased would have been 84
years of age. For sixty-two years he was a local preacher in the M. E. church. The
deceased lived in Boonville several years, and was one of the widest-known inhabitants of
this county. He was a model Christian, and beloved by hosts of sincere friends. Deceased
leaves a wife, four daughters and five sons. The burial took place Monday at Brown's
Chapel cemetery, the solemn services being conducted by Revs. R. R. Bryan and Kiper of
Boonville.

No idea at all who this is. It could be Benjamin Esom, possible son of John & his third wife Chelly Esom - the male 20-30 could be him (b. 1816 = 24); the young female could be his new wife - and the other people could be in-laws?
