~1846 - 1861
Co Mayo, Ireland - Warrick Co, Indiana
John was the fourth child of Michael and Mary Stanton. He was born in about 1846 in County Mayo, Ireland. The family emigrated to the US in 1847-8 [Ship Viceroy - Liverpool to New Orleans - arrival date 4 Jan 1848]. They settled in Warrick County, Indiana, and in 1849/1850 the father Michael died.
Mary and her six children were still together for the 1850 census:

Mary Stanton 37 F Ireland
Thomas 17 farmer Ireland
Mary 13
Patsey 11
John 8
Michael 5
Austin 3 all born Ireland
I think mother Mary got married again in 1851 (to John P Baker) and for sure sister Mary Ann married in 1853 (to Thomas Baker, John P's probable nephew). I think mother Mary was widowed again before 1860, and for that census, the family is scattered: mother Mary and sons Patrick and Austin are with Mary Ann's parents-in-law (and mother Mary's possible brother- and sister-in-law); Michael is with the McCools; Thomas is nowhere to be found (possibly off on adventures out west, possibly just left off the census somehow) - and John is with his sister Mary Ann and her husband and three children:

When the Civil War broke out, John was one of the first to enlist.
I think this first bit comes from the Civil War Database

John enlisted in the 25th Indiana Infantry on August 19, 1861. There is no record of his mustering out, but his grave stone says he died November 2, 1861. As far as I can tell, the 25th engaged in no fights between August and November; they mostly marched, first to St. Louis and then to Jefferson City and Georgetown. "It marched to Springfield with Fremont's forces and back to Otterville 240 miles, in 16 days. It remained in the vicinity of Otterville until December . . . ." - by which time, poor John was dead.
He is buried in Mt Gilead cemetery, next to sister Mary Ann and her husband and son.

John seems to have been well-loved by his siblings - both Mary Ann and Michael named a son after him.
