1882 - 1949
Indiana - Kentucky
Clarence Stanton was born 23 Feb 1882.
His mother died in 1897, when he was 15. In 1900 (age 18), he was still living with his widowed father and 3 siblings:
1900 Warrick Ward 2, house 149 taken June 8, 1900 - 137 Division St
Stanton, Michael b. Aug 1841 age 58 widowed b Ire f b Ire m b Ire day laborer
Flora daughter Apr 1880 20 single Ind Ire Ky
Clarence Feb 1882 18
Jonah Feb 1885 15 at school
Pearl Mar 1889 11
In 1901, his father went to the Marion Soldier's Home, but I don't know what happened to the children. Clarence would have been old enough to be on his own.
At one time I thought he might have joined the army during the oughts - his married brother Rufus did - I even found a military Clarence in Hawaii in 1910. But his death certificte says he did NOT serve in the armed forces.
In 1910-11, he married Mary Florence Sands Their children were:
John Edward Stanton b 1911 - d 1933
"he was killed when he was either 16 or 18 (can't remember exactly) in a shooting accident. i think he tripped and shot himself."
Aletha Pearl Stanton b 17 Sep 1913 - d Jan 1994
"Hi! guess what my dad told me last night. he said my grandmother, Aletha Stanton Roehm found out when she was 50 that her legal name was Martha Dewess! she then had it legally changed to aletha, but that is strange cause no one ever told her about it and she only found out when she was 50! just thought that was interesting!"
Martha Estelle Stanton b~ 1916.
The information in quotes comes from Clarence's great-granddaughter. When I last talked to her, she was in Med. School in Alabama. I think it's nice that both Clarence and Rufus had daughters named Aletha.
Clarence says (in the 1930 census) that his age at first marriage was 28, which would put the marriage date at 1910. So if his daughter Aletha (b. 1913) was really Martha Deweese, then was she adopted? And if Aletha's original legal name was Martha, it seems odd that the name would be taken away - and then given to the next child. Just more genealogical confusion for us to mull over.
Clarence lived in Owensboro, Kentucky, just across the river from Warrick County. Here he is in the next two censuses:

Sometime in the 1940s, Rufus and his wife (and her sister Maude) visited Clarence and Florence:
