John Stanton

1870 - 1933
Indiana - West Virginia

The first child of Michael and Mary Polly Deweese Stanton, John was born 5 Jan 1870. Presumably he was named after the brother who died in the Civil War. He was with Michael in the1870 and 1880 census.

At some point he moved to West Virginia and our family memories say he died there in 1932 (actually it was 1933).  I think this is him on the 1900 census:

1900 West Virginia - Ming - Harvey, Dist 89 - SD3, ED89, Sheet 6b - 4 June
Stanton, John boarder mw Jan 1870 30 Ind Ireland Ky coal miner
- Emily Creston’s boarding house

In 1901, John married Daisy Powers:

Register of marriages - from the West Virginia Archives and History site:
(Scroll down to Births, Deaths and Marriages database, choose one and search)
1901 Sept 18 - Red Star - John Stanton, Daisy E Powers - his age 29, hers 20 - both residing Fayette Co, WV - his parents Mike and Polly, her parents RG and Martha - his occupation miner

I haven't found birth records for their children, but from the census and other documents, it would seem they had four:

Elmo (a girl) born somewhere between 1898 and 1902
Austin (actually John Austin) born 29 Dec 1902 (from a marriage certificate)
Elva (a girl) born 28 Aug 1904
Ethel born 21 Oct 1908
All of the children were born in West Virginia.

Here is that 1910 census for West Virginia.

1910 - West Virginia - Raleigh Co - Roll 1695, Bk 2 - Prosperity - 11 / 12 SD 5, ED 179, Sheet 16a - taken 2 May 1910 - 55 Cranberry 272-272 - line 46

In 1913, his father, Michael Stanton, died, and John was listed in his (Michael's) obit as living in West Virginia.

In 1919, there is another marriage for him (from the same WV site):

Raleigh County - Beckley - 1919 Nov 18
John Stanton - Louisa Maggie Cooper
John born Warrick Co, Ind, age 49, residence Scarborough, WV
Louisa born Kanawha Co, WV, age 40, residence Eccles EV

In 1920, he is with his new wife and a whole bunch more children:

                 Maggie 42
                 Denis 14 / Ethel 13 / Earl 12 / Russel 10 / Virginia 9 / Dallas 8 / Goldia 6
Denis and Earl are probably Maggie’s children, Ethel is John's - the others could be either Maggie’s or John and Daisy’s (since I don’t know when Daisy died).

In 1926, he married yet another time:

Mae, aged 37, born Charleston, WV, parents William and Nana, divorced

I don’t know what happened to Mae, but in 1930, he was living alone again, and was listed as a widower:

I don't know who Dallas is the brother OF, since the names AND birthplaces are different. I wonder if Stella E is another name Ethel tried out?

He died on 23 Dec 1933 in Fayette Co, WV. His death certificate is also available at the WV Archives site. It says he was born 5 Jan 1870 in Indiana, that he was a widower, that his occupation had been fire boss in mines. The informant was his son-in-law, Dewey Jones.

About his children (death and marriage certificates available for some of them on the WV site):

Ethel born 21 Oct 1908 - changed name to Kathleen
lived with parents in 1910, lived with father and step-mother in 1920

          m William Mills
          died 29 Sept 1979
buried Trinity Gardens Cemetery, Waldorf MD
NOTE (Jan 2012): I have been in touch with a descendant of Ethel’s. He says she changed her name to Kathleen (and who could blame her!) - and he gave me the other information about her - I personally had found no trace of her after 1910.
