I always wondered if this man could be related to my Warrick County Stantons - maybe an uncle, or an older cousin - who sent back word that this was a good place to live, and so that was why my people came to Warrick County.
I don't know if that is true, but I have learned more about him. Most of this information comes from Sharon Parrish, who is very generous with sharing her research.
Thomas Stanton was born in Ireland, according to the census sometime between 1775 and 1794. His wife was Comfort Conway, and she was born about 1796. It is thought that they were married in Ireland, and that they came over, first to Kentucky (probably Louisville), in about 1815.
There was a Thomas Stanton in Indiana who served in the War of 1812. There were Thomas Stantons in Kentucky in 1810 - two in Casey County (both in the 26-45 age group), one in Garrard (also 26-45) - but they don't seem to match. (Too many children, too soon.)
Thomas and Comfort were in Warrick County in time for the 1820 census. At that time they had 2 boys and 2 girls under 10, Thomas was in the 26-45 age range and Comfort in the 16-26.
The two boys were Greenbury W. Stanton, born about 1818 in Kentucky, and Jesse Conway Stanton. The girls (according to Jesse Stanton descendants) were twins, Eliza and Nancy, born between Greenbury and Jesse. Eliza is said to have married a John Littlejohn (some say he was with a circus) and moved to the south and died sometime during the Civil War. Nancy is said to have died in young womanhood.
Thomas died in 1823; Comfort married again and moved to Champaign County, Ohio (or moved to Champaign County and married again). The new husband was Daniel Hullinger. There are two Daniels in the 1830 census in Campaign Co, but one is 80-90 years old, so I imagine Daniel Hullinger junior is the one Comfort married. In 1830, Daniel's household consisted of 1 boy, 2 girls under 5; 1 boy, 2 girls aged 5-10; 2 boys, 1 girl aged 10-15; 1 boy 15-20; a woman (Comfort?) 20-30 and a man (presumably Daniel) 50-60. Daniel had also been married before, so the children on that census are a mixture of his, hers and theirs.
I didn't find Daniel in 1840, but he is on the 1850 census:

In 1870 there is a Jessey in Champaign County again, but not everyone agrees that he is the same person, although the vital staticstics fit.

In 1880 Jesse Stanton was living with Jacob Hinklin and wife Sarah in Decatur County, Iowa, Eden Township (Sarah was Jesse's daughter, he is listed as father-in-law to head of household Jacob Hinklin) (Sarah was married but she is listed in death records as Sarah Stanton and no one acknowledges that she married Jacob Hinklin, I have seen the record though and this census info confirms it - notes by Sharon Parrish).

Jesse Stanton moved back to Starke County, IN sometime after 1880 to be near his sons. He died around 1887.
His two sons were Greenbury AUSTIN (b 1845 in Ohio) and Daniel H. born Sept. 13, 1842 Champaign, Ohio. They are in the 1880 census.

(This next information comes from Wanda Chance, who posted it on the Stanton Family
GenForum web-site 29 Dec 2001)
Daniel H Stanton was at some time president of Hamlet State Bank.
He was married to Sarah J Hall.
Their children were:
Victoria E (would this be Ellen?) - married Stephen D Tucker
Thomas Franklin - married Bertha Kiser
Florence R - married Walter Gibbs
Della T (Adela?) - married Grant Macumber
Dora - married Jasper Kiser
Clyde - married Maggie Masterton
Iva P - married Charles Sider
P. Seaman - married Bertha Otto
And that is all I have on the Thomas-Stanton-from-1820 family.
