2011 - I have been working on the Stevensons again, but got bogged down (again) when I got to John, so this page has NOT been straightened out yet, although I did correct one error.
These come from the fee books of Augusta Court (Chalkley v. 2) and as I understand it each description refers to a different person. Unfortunately, I have no clear idea which person is meant in the other entries in Chalkley.
1749, 1749/50 John Stevenson, Borden's land
1749/50 John Stevenson, Black Smith
1756 John Stevenson near North River above BL (Borden Patent Line?)
1756, 1757, 1758, 1759, 1770, 1776 - John - Peaked Mountain
1758, 1767, 1770 John - Stone Meeting House
1761 John - BM
at first I thought this was a misreading for PM (Peaked Mountain), but it could be Beverly Manor
1767 John - Pastures
One John Stevenson was described as a distiller.
I. John - patent from Borden, 1741, 1743
I assumed both these grants were from Borden, but they may not be. The 1743 one certainly is. It is mentioned in a list of deeds recorded in Orange County executed by Benjamin Borden (on a very nice website: http://genealogy.patp.us/bordende.shtml#nb511). No mention of one from Borden to John in 1741 - so possibly it is in another completely different place. I still assume both related to THIS John because both are turned over to John’s son-in-law Archibald Huston - unless of course this Archibald is the father of John’s son-in-law. Sigh.)
This is what I think I know about this John.
He was married first to Sarah. They had a daughter named Mary who married Archibald Huston in 1749. Assuming she was 18 when married, she would have been born ~ 1731, and assuming John was at least 18 when she was born, then he would have been born ~1713 - which makes him more or less a contemporary of William (~1721) and ..... .
I believe he lived near the Taylors and Hustons on Timber Ridge, on or near Mill Creek. There are several Mill Creeks, but the one I think this John lived on was a branch going north off the James, toward the Allisons, Pattersons, Hendersons, Taylors and Hustons
He wrote his will in 1777. I think Mary was his only child - she is at any rate the only child of his mentioned in his will. He also mentions her children, and his wife’s children. This wife - I am assuming she was his second wife - was Esther and the children of hers that were mentioned were Jonathan and Esther Taylor. So she apparently had been married before as well, to a Taylor. From a Genforum posting, it seems her maiden name was Wait (d/o James) and her first husband was John Taylor. As you can see from the entries below, John Taylor died in 1772, and Esther and John Stevenson were married by 1782.
John Stephenson married a first time, poss a Susannah ??; 2nd wife was Esther Waite TAYLOR, dau of James Waite & widow of John Taylor. John lived at Mill Creek Valley in Rockingham Co. just S of Rt 33 East of Harrisonburg. His daughter Mary Married Archibald HUSTON. I connect thru George HUSTON his son who married a Snapp, then their daughter, Mary Susan, who married Philip Pitman, thru their daughter Viola Lavinia who married W.H. GOLD. Have some pretty good documentation on this from Chalkley. Will gladly share what I have ( & suspect.)
Stephenson Genforum Message 871 - Mary Thomason-Morris - Aug 31 1999
A curious thing is that John Stevenson appraised John Taylor’s estate in 1772 - and he also appraised the estate of an earlier John Taylor in 1747.
There is the problem of a patent being made to John (wife Esther) in 1756, and John and Sarah delivering land to Archibald Huston in 1773, but I think this is just because the deeds or patents or whatever were not recorded until later. John Taylor did not die until 1772.
II. One John Stevenson was the son of William and Sarah
William, who died in 1757, mentioned wife Sarah, sons Adam, David, James, John, Matthew, William and daughters Sarah and Elizabeth in his will. Several of the children were still “infants” (girls under 18; I’m not sure what the age was for boys - although since Adam was made administrator along with William’s wife Sarah, he couldn’t have been all that much of an infant.) David's wife divided her estate between David's family and hers - she mentions Adam, James and William (all deceased by 1816), but she does not mention John or Matthew. My assumption is that Matthew died or left the area young (he appears only twice in Chalkley) and that John either had no children or was not on good terms with the family - one John does sue the widow of one Adam, his brother.
III. In 1749 a John Stevenson was added to titheables - I assume this is a younger John???
IV. In 1753 John Stevenson and Jane James are involved in some deal; in 1764 John Stevenson and Jane (leaving the Stevenson to be inferred) did another deal.
V. One of the Johns died in 1770 - his wife was possibly Mary - at any rate Mary S and Andrew Hays were administrators of his estate. (The Hayses were intermarried with the Lusks a lot)
A John Stevenson is mentioned in connection with almost every other Stevenson found in Chalkley - Adam, Andrew, David, George, James, Matthew, Thomas and William.
One died ~1770, one (John I) died 1777, one left the county 1779.
One was married to a Margret.
One John Stevenson appears several times in connection with John Bomgardner, for whom Thomas Godfrey worked.

Note: I was not looking for the Stevensons when I had the actual book in my hands. I photocopied many pages, and on some of them there are mentions of Stevensons as well as Lusks - which accounts for the spotty nature of the documentation.
